Pretty sure it's a form of DRM dressed up as a cool(ish) feature. Don't think it'll affect their sales all that much, to be honest, even if a loud minority will be very loud indeed about this. (Is it a crappy move on EA's part? Yes, probably. Is it the end of the world? No.)

Can't see why it wouldn't provoke a lot of negative noise. The idea seems to be Steam with all its negatives but without any of its (supposed) benefits, and without the support of the large cheerleading squad that Valve fanboys provide.
