The developer has a blog here:

Apparently with the iOS version and the GOG.com release, "the game has now reached a much larger audience than it found when it came out in 1999".
As it's only been out for a day on GOG.com, I assume that the bulk of that is the 20,000 iOS sales, although I've honestly no idea what sort of sales figures GOG can generate these days -- the release certainly generated a significant buzz, and although obviously tiny by comparison to the number of iOS users, the GOG community is also clearly a more targeted audience for a game like this (and that buzz might well translate to additional iOS sales, too -- it must be a great fit for the mobile format, after all).

I was thinking of getting this on my iPad after reading the two recent threads about the game. It has always stood out somewhat vaguely in my mind as being the must-play game that almost no one has played.
I'm keen to give it a go as it looks well suited to a tablet but at $10.50 it's a relatively high priced game for the appstore. Has anyone here played the iPad version yet?
