like with all the games steam offers and are not from valve. for me in europe the difference for kings bounty steam/retail is only 4euros so it's actually a good offer.

No, you shouldn't purchase it through Steam.
You either should have got it weeks/ months ago off Gamersgate when it was cheaper than Steam's release deal, or now from retail, again for less than Steam.
Sounds like a plan. Had I known about the title sooner, I would've purchased it instead of Prince of Persia.

Awesome, my Steam transaction caused my bank to phone me up due to "suspected card fraud" :D

Yeah, my credit card company doesn't like Steam or iTunes transactions
at all.

I've also had some dead-beat spankers trying to buy stuff at Napster with my old card details, which thankfully they also flagged and halted.
I've no idea how they determined that the Steam transaction was merely 'suspcious' hence they let it go through but told me, yet the fraudulent Napster one they blocked outright.

Just finished it.
Addictive, simple and fun. At its core the game is very repetitive but the continuous upgrades and new species somehow are fresh enough to keep things fun and interesting.
Also, the animations are great.
The only real negative point I felt were the avatar graphics. These are just too clean-cut-fairytale-prince-with-great-hair-on-white-horse for my taste. Even though they do fit the game perfectly.

Is this game worth playing if
a) you already played the 1990 (1991?) version and liked that for its simplicity;
b) don't care for the graphics?
What does it do differently/better than that 500 kb EGA wonder?

If you like the original then the new one is worth playing. Since I can't remember too much about the original, I won't make a comparison.

It's similar in a lot of ways, different in others (hah, so helpful)
Like the original (which I haven't exactly played loads - so I'm not an expert there), you recruit your army stacks from castles, wander around the countryside(s), find chests of gold, attack enemy stacks/heroes and sometimes beseige castles. Leadership is still there, as are (more, I think) spells. Battles are superficially quite similar.
The main character page is a lot more RPG-like in this. You can get a bunch of magic items to improve various stats, learn skills through the collection of magic runes (you also get these when levelling up) and there's an addition to spellcasting in this called RAGE, where you summon up some creatures to perform special attacks for you. Also, the quests are a bit more wide-ranging on the adventure map. However, I think the original randomly generated terrain to some extent, yes? That doesn't happen in this one, the maps are all static - although where items/armies/spell scrolls etc spawn will be different every time.
Err ... probably a few other things too. Basically, it's not a straight remake but there are a lot of things you will recognise (the battles, especially). Oh, there's no barbarian character in this one (though you can recruit them), so if he was your favourite then bad luck. Also, the sorceress is now david bowie.
I'm not sure from your post whether you're saying you don't care for the graphics of the original or this new one. If it's the new one then, welp, you're going to have to be looking at them a lot (the game is fucking huge), so maybe take that into account.
There's a pretty lengthy demo floating around, so just try that first! (
