Knock 'em out!... But what's the catch? - by TheGrimSmile

I prefer to go through a mission without using the blackjack too much...at least the first time through.
Then, I'll go back through, knock everyone out, then look for whatever I missed (secrets, loot, etc).
Its really satisfying to finish a mission with all the loot and secret requirements at some point, at each difficulty. This is really helpful when you're playing FMs and the author gets creative with their loot hiding...:)

Once they come to investigate (are alerted) they aren't KO'able till they calm back down.
That's funny, I remember doing it all the time if for some reason I wanted to complete a section quickly ...
Maybe it's only possible in Thief 2?

It has never been implemented in the original missions, but it is doable indeed in FMs. ;)

What is?
Regarding the debate "playing style x vs. playing style y":
Just play the game the way YOU like it. And let others play it their way.
Since it is all about a "style", it all boils down to a matter of taste. There's no point, really, to argue about it since there isn't a "best" way to play Thief...
Regarding the original topic:
You might consider the fact that there are some blackjack resistant enemies a catch. Like the sword or your assortment of arrows, each of your tools has its uses and times when it is useless (or something else might yield better results).
I don't think there's a "catch" to the bj; it's only an option and one that isn't always viable or prudent.

I suppose pushing the various tools into hard molds is asking too much, especially for a game like this.
Nonetheless, I wonder how much use the sword sees in the game. Just as a question, playing around or trying to beat a mission, has anyone ever killed everyone in a level with the sword and lived to tell the tale?

Well, do you mean a BLACKJACK, or the goofy spiked club they CALLED a blackjack in III?
A Blackjack and/or Sap is a flap of leather wrapped around lead shot or pebbles secured with a strap - it is intentionally designed NOT to kill because the loose particles inside shift around the pouch softening the blow and spreading it over a larger area. You can get blackjacks up into the killing range by adding a spring in the handle and using larger pellets, but that's really not what the weapon is for - there's a REASON it was used by police until the advent of stunguns, mace and pepper spray... Sad part is it got a reputation for abuse and ended up being replaced by... the tonfa-style baton, a much more dangerous weapon.
... while that spiked club 'thing' in III is pretty much a killing tool - and completely unsuited for use by Garrett who considers killing to be 'for amatures' - yet another of my many complaints about how deadly shadows seemed to be made by people who 'didn't get it'.
