It's not too hard to get behind an attacking guard, and to get him hopping in a desperate circle as he attempts to turn towards Garrett again.
But even though I attack from behind, I haven't solved the mystery of what causes some of my blackjack attacks during that period to knock the guard out, while others just injure him. Is there a particular time during the fight when I need to strike? Do I need to wait for the end of his current animation? Is there some other clue that would indicate that a hit right now will knock him out?

i am unable to K.O. a gaurd during battle but i found out that if the gaurd knows your there but doesn't see you and is not chasing you, you can knock him out.

I usually can knock out a pursuing guard if I have enough of a lead. Run into dark shadow, spin around, and lean forward and blackjack him just as he gets in range. He has to still be running and not in a combat stance, but it works most every time. Your light gem has to be completely dark I think. But in the middle of combat? Very rarely has a KO been successful for me.

I've knocked out guards who were ready to fight me too. I have no idea either what allows you to do this. It seems to be much easier in T1 than T2 though. It also seems to work better in dark areas.
For a laugh, try knocking out a guard and quicksaving before his animation stops. When you reload, he will pop up and fall down again and it is quite funny.

A bunch of variables:
In the older titles, velocity can increase damage, but I don't know if this applies to the blackjack.
The blackjack removes one Hit Point, so without other variables, it should take the same number of strikes to kill the same AI every time, 10 or 12 for most.
Using the Block key while wielding the blackjack is a loophole in the code and just knocks the AIs out. It's been dubbed blockjacking.
Timing is not a factor but where it changes terminal velocity.
Body zones are not a factor.

Does blockjacking work in T2 or only T1? I thought I tried it in T2 and it didn't work.

Hmmm. I can't remember. I'll have to look up the thread on it. I tried it once and it worked, but I can't even say which of the games it was. :p

I vaguely remember making a few successful knockouts by getting the guard out of his defensive posture long enough to hit him on the head. So long as he is not in "attack mode" he/she susceptible.

There are plenty of ways to KO alert guards. If they absolutely cannot see you--under flashbomb-blindness or pitch-blackness--they will go down.

I often use doors to KO enemies:
When a guard is chasing you, hide behind a closed door which opens towards you. When the guard attempts to open the door to follow you, blackjack him through the door. Since he can't see you through the door, he will fall no mater what, as long as you are blocking the door as it opens. I hope this makes sense...
I can't recall this technique ever failing. In fact, it makes the game so easy, I sometimes force myself into not using it to make the game more of a challenge... :)
