There are plenty of ways to KO alert guards. If they absolutely cannot see you--under flashbomb-blindness or pitch-blackness--they will go down.
If you BJ them in the darkness then they will go down ! [snigger]
Ah ! my childlike mind :cheeky:

I was playing "Seven shades of mercury" last night and stepped out of the shadows in front of a Red Team archer...he cried "AAAAHAAA" I blackjacked him in the face and he went down,my light gem was fully lit....so its so variable when you can and cant get a good blackjack in :D

I'm fairly certain the AI change(from unaware to suspicious to alerted) is on animation-based delay. That's why you can knock people out even though they're doing their "omg" animation.

I'm fairly sure the omg period lasts longer on lower difficulties, too.

I've been blackjacking guards while they are alert. It's pretty easy once you know how
Basically once they are aware of you, and rushing towards you or something (alert), your light gem is the main thing to watch out for. No matter where you are relative to them, if your light gem is not dark, you cannot knock them out, even if you're behind them. If your gem is dark enough, you can even knock guards out by hitting them on the forehead, though you must lean towards them when making the strike.
When the guards are aware of your presence, they have this 6th sense that prevents them from being knocked out as long as your gem is lit up. That's why if youre fighting in a lit area, you can never knock them out, even from behind. Fight in a dark room and you're bound to knock them out since you'll eventually strike while your gem is dark enough =)
