ive been hacking into Thief 2's files (cam.cfg, and even Thief2.exe, and the other .cfg files and others), and came across many instances and references to multiplayer... things. like host/network errors, joining messages, etc. and was wondering if any1 found a way to make Thief 2 LAN-capable, cuz that would b totally sweet!:cheeky:

If there was ANY way to make Thief playable online, I'm sure it would have been discovered by now. As it is, I don't think you can. The only 'Thief Online' we have is Thievery UT.

im not necessarily talking about a ONLINE feature, but a multiplayer feature (ie. having a Thief 2 LAN party, multiple computers in the same general area). If you want, you can use a hex editor or notepad to edit cam.cfg and thief2.exe and search for things like 'network', 'multi', and 'host.' youll find many instances of these words in the files and that leads me to believe that there is a multiplayer feature that isnt directly implemented in Thief 2, even if it is only LAN and not online. ive gone through many of thief 2's game files and found multiple references to networking, hosts, and general networking errors. all anyone needs to do is go through some of the files in Thief 2 with something like Hex Workshop or even Notepad and look for them.

The Developers of Thief said they could never get multiplayer working in the Thief engine for some reason. Glitchy I guess and they had higher priorities on the list. The System Shock version of the Dromed engine has multiplayer capability but I think people have tried to port that into Thief without any luck as well.
You're likely not the first, nor the last to spot these things. It's doubtful that it will ever work as some of our greatest have no doubt tried in vain, but stranger things have happened.

well, that bites, but it makes sense. one problem i could see w/ multiplayer T2 would be the levels themselves, theyd need to place different spawns on the maps, and also most of the in-game maps would be a little small for LAN games. im sure its POSSIBLE, its just that noone has found a successful way to implement it...yet. itd also b kinda cheap to play many of the missions with more than 1 player, as they could just royally gank the npcs and beat the mission in under 5 minutes. but ya, i believe it is possible to make a LAN mod for T2, but it would take a long time, not only just the base implementation, but also the levels... make an entirely seperate version of thief specifically meant for multiplayer, that would be EXTREMELY tedious...:erg: so i can see the problem facing many developers in trying to make a multiplayer thief.. but it would b totally sweet!:sly:

And this is where someone usually mentions Thievery.

Someone already did. Your eyesight is weak old man.

Hey, clearly someone had to mention it again, because RavynousHunter [sic] didn't seem to catch it the first time.

Indeed. It would be awesome, i've thought of thief multiplayer myself. Thief LAN would diffenetly make more since than full blown online. That would be ridiculous. Also, it would be more interesting if it was Thief Gold/TDP LAN, rather than Thief 2.;)

If people REALLY wanted multiplayer Thief the best way to do it would be to do a Thief mod of SS2 (I think). (besides Thievery)
