No, doofus, I'm not talking about things like drinking and driving. Do that and you are jeopardizing other driver's lives.
I'm talking about idiots like this:
Quote:
Fernando waved his hand over the crowd and asked a visiting reporter: "Do you see the situation?"
At his public school, Little Village Academy on Chicago's West Side, students are not allowed to pack lunches from home. Unless they have a medical excuse, they must eat the food served in the cafeteria.
Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices."Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school," Carmona said. "It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It's milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception."
Carmona said she created the policy six years ago after watching students bring "bottles of soda and flaming hot chips" on field trips for their lunch. Although she would not name any other schools that employ such practices, she said it was fairly common.

On the other hand the Hungarian parliament just passed an additional tax on fatty and high-sugar food products and that's the best thing ever. I wish they did the same here.

I dunno. The taxes on cigarettes doesn't seem to keep people from buying them. It just makes it even harder for low-income people to afford things that they actually need, since they're wasting so much money on cigarettes. So putting a tax on unhealthy things doesn't improve the health of the users; it decreases the health of the users.
I know kids whose parents buy cheap, unhealthy food because they can't afford to buy better food, because they're wasting money on cigarettes.
I suppose there will be plenty who cite natural selection, but aside from "think of the children" arguments, my point is that if you're adding a tax to unhealthy things to try to improve the health of those who use them (by coercing them to not buy them), it doesn't work. Quite the opposite.
Any solution to convince people to not buy junk food lies elsewhere.

I am outraged, sir!

Also forcing kids to eat school meals instead of healthy parent-prepared ones. But that's almost a by-issue; the actual issue being debated there is whether a nanny state is a good thing or a bad thing. Government child-raising or parent child-raising. (I'm fairly neutral on the subject, having witnessed approximately equal horrors inflicted upon children by parents and by state.)
Chimpy Chompy on 13/7/2011 at 14:32
Well I'm guessing there was some widespread problem of parents either not providing healthy lunches (lack of money? inclination?) or maybe just giving the kids money (which they invariably buy junk with).
Okay such cafeteria food often isn't fantastic but I imagine it does you better than chips every day. I grew up eating school dinners, and so did a lot of kids here in the UK, dunno how it works over there. It doesn't look like a good place to pick a battle over nanny state issues. The important thing is that kids get a healthy lunch every day, which many might not if the school doesn't put one in front of them. The loss of personal liberty is not a major one here.

The idea is good but the political background this comes from is fascist and hence confirms every fear of state control someone might have in this issue.
