Last game I bought?
Mass Effect actually.
Haven't even so much as run it yet.

I'm enjoying Halo Reach's gameplay as well, actually. Definitely the best one that I've played since Halo 1.

Bought Siren 1 (Forbidden Siren) today. Goddamn, still hard as nails, and the hilarious British voice acting...

L4D 1&2 with 66% off... Sweet deal.
Still, not so reasonable considering I have to find 2700€ before the end of the year week :nono:

King's Field : The Ancient City (PS2), horror title Kuon (PS2), and.... THE METAL GEAR SOLID COLLECTION (PS2) that has MGS 1, MGS 2: Substance, and MGS 3 : Subsistence (well most of it). Was waiting to try this new camera angle they added, as I bought MGS 3 vanilla on day 1 and played it that way.

They are good, especially the KF. BTW, soon will play Demon's Souls at last.

Blood from gog.com. It's on sale ya' know...

Ahhh, you're shitting me. I just paid full price for it not even 3 days ago. Damnit, GOG. Damnit. I could've saved 3 bucks.
Blood does confirm one thing I've thought for awhile. Most genres have improved with age, except first person shooters. The FPS golden age started with Doom, and ended after Unreal Tournament. We've seen some alright FPSes since, but none have reached the heady heights of Doom64, Unreal, Duke Nukem, and as I'm figuring out, Blood.
Sure, they're nicer looking now, but they're just not as fun.

For me, Stalker is better than any of them. I guess it isn't a rip-roaring, shoot-everything-in-sight game like the ones you've cited, and it isn't exactly a pure FPS, but I've personally never had more fun playing a game outside of multiplayer team RTS. The FPS genre has changed, and for the better. People want more reward for progressing through the game than just 'level 5 u get bigger gun.' People want stats and specialisation, inventories, plots and so on. There are what could be termed crossovers nowadays - Alpha Protocol, Fallout 3, Mass Effect. They may be crossovers, but these are the games that are holding the attention of the market (I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing, it's just an observation). Are they FPS or RPG? Does it matter? You still have a big gun and point it at stuff
Also, a lot of people would say the opposite, and that RPGs are in decline, more than in the FPS genre. Look at all the bitching on RPS and RPGCodex. You know, "qq what happened to turn-based combat," "Mass Effect streamlining the RPG experience more like raped and killed my mother and pissed on her grave," "I wish they had just reboxed the original Fallout every year because everything else is shit." You know, scorched earth, fml stuff. I personally disagree with those sentiments and, like a lot of people, have caught the first-person modern RPG bug. But a lot of people still think the cRPG is in decline
As for RTS, where's the competitor to Starcraft 2? The original had to compete with Total Annihilation. What is there now? Nothing even vaguely within striking distance. Company of Heroes is probably the best RTS of recent times and that was released in 2006
I was more able to have fun playing any old game when I was a kid. You could have plunked me down in front of Duke Nukem and I would have loved the hell out of it. I tried replaying it a few years ago and it didn't have the allure of modern FPS games. Same with Doom. I didn't feel like finishing these games. Yes, modern games are prettier but there is often also more refinement and restraint. There are plot arcs and all sorts of shit that was barely embryonic back in the nineties
