I am doing research on this online but there is so much jargon and posing it is hard to get good info and I know you folks mostly know what's what.
There's a little, 'used stuff' emporium which opened up in our neighbourhood and they have tons of gaming consoles that are one or two generations old. Can anyone offer suggestions about recently surpassed but still perfectly good consoles? I have never used a console, being a PC gamer thus far.
I would be using it with a 42 to 52 inch screen and playing more sedate FPS like Thief, Far Cry or Splinter Cell, maybe a bit of racing or fishing... so enormous particle pumping power probably won't be required. Still I would like to have reasonably smooth graphics.
What features are important? Memory, power, speed, controllers accessories, games?
Thanks in advance.

PS2 is the greatest console ever, and if you can find a functioning Phat model all the better. PS3 is also a good pick, especially if you like Dark Souls, but you're better off getting the Slim model for that one.

Why stick to games you can get for PC? Look up some of the more avant-garde games of the past, there are loads on console, especially on PlayStation.

I'd second what NuEffect said - and the only feature that I'd consider important is the list of games that's available for the system. I was very happy with both my PS2 and the PS3, and the games on the former that I enjoyed best are available in HD ports for the latter, so that's what I'd go for.

Yeah I wondered if this was the right place but think of it more as a product recommendation thread than a gaming thread. Anyway, the mods will decide.
The PC games I listed were examples of the type / speed of thing I would be playing. I certainly will be looking for new, non-PC experiences. The used emporium has tons of games as well. So any of those "avant-garde" suggestions are welcome too.
My game capable PC died big time and it occurred to me that for the price of a decent video and sound card I could probably get a dedicated system instead.

I can certainly suggest Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection for PS3, and Journey too.
Demon's/Dark Souls/II, naturally, and if you really hate yourself, dig up a copy of King's Field: The Ancient City for PS2.

You might get some useful suggestions from people that visit gen gaming and not comm chat so I've moved the thread.

I've mainly stuck with the XBoxes, so I can only give you recommendations on what you should check out if you do get a 360.
Great XBox 360 Exclusives
Crackdown
Halo ODST and Reach
Shadow Complex
The Project Gotham Racing, Forza and Gears Of War games are also popular exclusives, though I'm not really into any of them. Also, keep in mind that you'll have to shell out 60 bucks per year for a Gold Subscription if you wanna play multiplayer or use Netflix.
But on the plus side, it has a great gamepad!
If you do go with the 360 you'll have in your posession a gamepad which works great with pretty much any PC game as well. And, having spent the last month clutching a dualshock playing PS3, I think I'm qualified to say that the 360 pad is plain and simply the better one of the two. The dualshock is too small, the thumbsticks around too round and too close together, when I was playing Uncharted 3 recently and I had to look left while strafing right my thumbs would mash together. A couple of days ago I started playing Saints Row 4 on PC, with the 360 gamepad, and it was such a relief. Holding the 360 pad, it was like my hands were going on a little vacation. It was so comforting, so relaxing, so natural, especially after THE ORDEAL OF THE DUALSHOCK. Ok, I'm exagerating. The dualshock is perfectly usable. But the 360 pad is better.
Overall though, you might still be better off going with the PS3, purely because of all the great exclusives it has.
