With Doom 64 not being available via VC, what other choice do you have?

eBay + (
https://www.retrode.com/) Retrode.
Hey, I never said it was practical. It only goes to show how important services like Virtual Console and GOG are. It sure would be nice if iD/Bethesda would get together with whoever grabbed the other half of the rights from the corpse of Midway and actually get the game re-released.

For what it's worth, IMO Doom 64 is better via D64EX anyway. I mean, as it stands, it's technically perfect, a 1:1 copy of the game, just with the added benefit of mouse and keyboard and a few bugfixes. But the upcoming 2.4 and 3.0 releases are going to really make Doom 64 stand out -- what Kaiser has planned with lightmaps and whatnot is going to revolutionize this little 17 year old game if the mapping community takes off.
And I know he has plans for other classic N64 FPS games, too...

Well, there's always the option of downloading roms. Just like there's always the option of pirating PC games. I believe the important distinction here is that these games are now widely and legally available again.
Except for when they're not, which is why I suggested buying what's available on the VC and using emulators for everything else.

Dethtoll: What I meant was that you could use the Retrode (or similar device) to extract the Doom 64 rom and you could use it with Doom 64 EX.
Jason, you're still glossing over where the roms come from for emulating games that aren't available on VC. Right now the only legal recourse is to track them down in Retro game shops or Ebay/Amazon and use a device like the Retrode to extract the rom image.

Doom 64 was one of the rare few games that tempted me towards a 64 back in the day. That and just how DAMN GOOD the Super Nintendo was.
But then I saw Silent Hill, Resident Evil 1, Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy 7 and it was all over. Never looked back. Plus with the PS1 you could chip it for $10 and then download and play all the games you ever wanted. That to me at that point in time was unheard of for consoles.
It didn't help also, that unlike with the SNES, Nintendo went even more so in a kid friendly direction compared to the PS1 which had proper M15+ and R-Rated games.

The very existence of Doom 64, Turok 1 and 2, and a number of other M rated games say you are wrong.
(They did heavily censor Duke Nukem 64, though... so there's that -- but then followed up with Duke Nukem Zero Hour which didn't shy away from titillation as much.)

Doom 64 is playable via Doom 64 EX anyway. I just went through it myself and it's damn near perfect.
What's the difference between Doom 64 EX and Doom 64 Absolution? I hadn't heard of EX until just now.
june gloom on 9/2/2014 at 22:49
It's essentially a 1:1 clone of the original game, using the assets extracted automatically from the ROM. This results in a truer experience -- Absolution is essentially a 90% approximation and due to the age of the engine it uses cannot do a lot of the things that were in the original game. The only thing EX is missing is the additional levels, but those maps were Kaiser's so they'll probably be ported over eventually anyway. But it has full mouselook as well as gamepad support if that's your kink.

I'll have to check it out, thanks.
