Most of the people here started playing games on PC, and even though lately more and more TTLGers have started using consoles, we're probably still a predominantly PC community.
For those here who after years of PC-only got a console (or three), what made you change your mind? Was it the consoles' functionality? A certain game?
In my case, it was a strong interest in the Team ICO games (I'm fascinated by games that deftly combine storytelling, characterisation and gameplay) that made me think about getting a PS2. Once I had it, I found all these games I'd heard about that I wanted to give a whirl: Guitar Hero, I Love Katamari, God of War. I'm still mostly a PC gamer, but I've come to enjoy the more social element that comes with living room gaming - added to which, with consoles it's easier to talk my girlfriend into playing the occasional video game with me. (I guess that the charms of Sackboy and Lego Obi-Wan on a widescreen HD TV help.)

Less technical hassles + exclusive games.

I got a PS2 for Metal Gear Solid 3, Splinter Cell and Splinter Cell Double Agent. I played the first two MGS games and the trailers for the third made it look awesome (they were right :)). As for Double Agent, I watched parts of it on youtube and most people said it was closer to the original SC gameplay, which is what I was looking for. The first Splinter Cell had a PS2 exlusive level which I just had to play. :)
These three were enough reason to get a PS2 and it was worth it, even though for me, the "living room gaming" you mention is by far the most annoying thing about it. I just don't want people walking around, talking, etc, when I want to immerse myself into the game. It also didn't help that our only TV is a 15 year old relic with mono sound. But the games were great, so it was fine in the end.
So for me, it was a decision based on these specific games. And it pretty much ends here, I'm not interested in any other console games. I'll remain a PC gamer.

what social element comes with living room gaming I miss at "desktop" gaming ?
and yeah, I got a PS2 for....like....10 euros and just borrow games from friends. I'll do the same with the PS3 once it is ....30 euros....

It's fun to plonk down on the sofa and play a co-op game on one screen. Obviously I could do this with a PC, but it'd be a major hassle for a number of reasons.

Bought myself a ps2 (a year ago) and ps3 (recently) , never had consoles earlier. It was a combination of factors for me.
I like good action adventure games that require reaction/button mashing (like GoW f.e.) and they are rare on PC, I like epic and hard boss fights too, I like surhor games (and the later are in abundance on ps2), and also I really like to sit in my armchair with a gamepad while playing games. Plus, I wanted to play many games that were simply unavailable on PC, very glad that I gave the consoles a try because I loved many games that I could miss otherwise. The later factor mainly applies to ps2 because there still aren't that many interesting (for me) exclusives for ps3, I'm not a graphics whore so 480i and 32Mb RAM is ok for me even in 2010 so long as a game is atmospheric and involving.

The exclusives. I bought a PS3 a little while ago, and it was primarily for the games. Heavy Rain in particular pushed me over the edge, which is still the only PS3 game I own, but I've got plenty of other titles I want to check out once I have the time and they're available/affordable. And also, as someone who's looking to pursue a career in game dev, I figured it's about time I stepped out of my technical comfort zone and get to experience more in the field.
I'll be staying a PC gamer first for certain, and I don't see the platform going under any time soon, but, going by today's console exclusives list, I expect I'll be getting good fun out of the console as a second gaming system too.

Just out of interest Ostriig, which games are on your acquisitions list, and what prices are you waiting for? I was shocked when I saw what some of the bigger-name PS3 games can be bought for in some places.

i got my pc at a large table with enough space for someone to sit besides and use the other pc+screen. i could imagine playin point and click on a couch. but certainly not...stalker for example
I did play some RPGs on the projector since they don't rely so much on realtime input.

Let's see. The wii I picked up because it had awesome potential. Failed to deliver, but since the thing has proven to be an excellent child distraction (or for that matter, drunk guest amusement), it's not been a total waste of money. Not used much though.
The 360 was a dirt cheap refurb, which I picked up so I had the option of console exclusives if there was something I really wanted to play. So far, it's mostly been used cheap games. Used more then the wii, but still haven't gotten huge quantities of use out of it.
