But games do degrade over time in many important ways - and much faster then tables, as well!
The bytes stored on a game cd are worthless - it is the game experience which has value. Just look at the words we choose: Graphics "age". Once sparkly game mechanics become "overused".
What does it mean for something to "age"? I'd say a good measure is percent reduction in market value over time assuming "standard" use. How much value does a game lose five years after it's release, compared to a table five years after production?
While I think you're definitely onto something here, I would say it has more to do with the quality of the game that causes it to age/devalue faster. Everybody knows that Deus Ex IW has MUCH better graphics than the original game, but I know which one I would rather play now. Same goes for Unreal 2 and Unreal. U2 = pretty graphics and bad gameplay, U1 = worse graphics but better gameplay and great music. The older game with the better gameplay wins in my book.

The difference isn't that physical goods degrade with time and software doesn't, but that physical goods degrade with use and software doesn't.

is a game used if it was bought as used the day after the game was released?
it's identical to the first bought experience, no theoretical degrading there.

Same if a car is sold used the day after it is purchased.

Which I believe is quite a rampant issue, no?

I almost posted news about that in this thread some time ago, but realized it was already posted in the BFBC2 discussion. It does sound like a user friendly method, and I wouldn't mind if my chosen game was protected like that, but it's been already cracked or so I heard, so from the corporation's POV it's no progress.

Some time ago? Was there a disk version of this available prior to yesterday?
Can you actually play online with punkbuster and the matchmaking service with a cracked copy? I don't think that ever worked in the other BF games.
