Latest Ubisoft DRM measure - all SP saves stored on a cloud server - by EvaUnit02

i have the "friendly" edition of AC2 since 4 days....2 before it was released here. there is NO difference to the "regular" one, same settings, size, files, checksums....I had a thorough sweep of all files (never know what they try to hide, pirates and publishers alike) and didn't find any difference or omissions.
and you can't test any "old" version of the ubi-service since it auto-updates upon start.
1) start AC2
2) login ubi-account (or use remember, then you do nothing), here is also the button for settings which there is only one: "disable saves on online server"
3) AC2 starts
4) AC2 exits and the launcher exits (no service, no dlls, no daemons)
BTW, you can now EXIT AC2 from any point by using "EXIT TO WINDOWS". WOW, hurray, some of their devs actually played a pc game and found out about that awesome feature of closing programs right away. port is ok, graphics are little better than AC1 and performance is a little better but nothing to write about. sadly they continue the new tradition to have onscreen help/prompts do NOT use the keybinding but have a stupid icon inplace of it (hand, head, feet, fist) which annoyed me already in PrinceOfPersia.

I really feel for the people who have paid money for the game not understanding what they were letting themselves into but I can't help hope that Ubi patch the games, put the whole idea behind them and move on.

That. Is. Fucked. UP.

As bad as I feel for the people who bought it, I hope this goes on as long as possible. The bigger the fuck up, the less likely Ubi (or any dev) to use this idea again.

...there's either a massive server failure at ubisoft, or the servers have been attacked/hacked...
Massive server failure kind of thing, apparently - from (

Due to exceptional demand, we are currently experiencing difficulties with the Online Service Platform. This does not affect customers who are currently playing, but customers attempting to start a game may experience difficulty in accessing our servers. We are currently working to resolve this issue and apologize for any inconvenience.

Hopefully this is a big enough clusterfuck to stop people using such draconian drm, although I suspect they'll fix it fairly promptly and everyone will have forgotten about it in a weeks time.
But while this helps establish that draconian drm is a bad option, it doesn't help the publishers find a good option. Even if this is a big screw up, I can't see publishers giving up on online services. They'll call it "online services" instead.
