Afternoon Taffers
After the big discussion about playing Thief on LCD monitors
(
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1558660#post1558660)
I have been researching an LCD with a low enough black level (less then 0.2-3 cd/m2) The monitor I have found is the Samsung SM971P 19" which has a black level of 0.1 cd/m2, a contrast ratio of 1500:1 and a response of 6ms....

Here are the results of my testing.
# The ghosting on the monitor is awful; any movement results in blurring and slight reduction of brightness. (It's so bad that I can see visible colour bleeding from the edges of objects)
# The backlight level is still not low enough - you can see light emanating from the corners and the backlight is uneven.
# The soft controls are not very useful, not having hard controls is a royal pain (can't adjust anything in-game).
# The weird stand/bracket - while very arty etc doesn't move up nearly far enough. (You're looking down, not level with the screen).
# Even after calibrating the monitor, the whites are still yellowish - I couldn't find any colour temp controls.
# Analogue mode on this monitor is every so slightly off (windows desktop shows slight, blurring, ghosting) - but this may be down to the supplied cable
# And finally it's only a margin sharper than my iiyama (which goes to show how good the iiyama is in comparison)
So it's going back to the shop
- avoid this monitor.

I am about to play Thief Gold (after about three years) and Thief Deadly Shaodows on my Samsung 204B. I'll update also with screenies as to how it turns out. It will be the first time I have played any of the Thief games on an LCD.
FYI
Samsung 204 has a contrast ratio of 800:1 with a 5ms response time and a native res of 1600x1200.

It's true for EVERY LCD I've seen so far. Very bad.

Interesting, so modern LCD monitors don't have hardware controls and it's not possible to adjust f.e. brightness or contrast in-game??

Hmm, the monitors I've seen recenly also haven't hardware controls.
So to adjust brightness you have to alt-tab to control center program or something to do it?

I have a DGM (Digimate) something, and my backlight is perfect (or near enough). I get true black and the white is white (if that makes sence), the only major problem i have, and it only affects thief 1 and 2, is that once i have read a scroll, or went to the pause menu or something, and it returns to the main game, the screen goes badly of center (moves to the left by about a 1/4), even selecting auto-adjust doesnt help. The only way to get the screen re-centered is to switch the monitor off and back on. Crazy!

Screw LCD. I'm jumping straight from CRT to OLED.

That's why I love my CRT Samsung 793DF (bought two months ago). LCD is good only for MS Word, in my honest opinion.
