From the makers of Dota Allstars comes their next effort in team-based online-rpg's: League of Legends.
The game is basically DOTA, but full fledged-out. Loads of different heroes, ladders and competitive play coupled with lots of way customize your "summoner" (avatar). What they're adding to the Dota is basically WoW skill trees and the ability to augment runes to make your heroes stronger.
But what makes this game interesting is that they recently said it's going to be
FREE. With micro-transactions. Apparently the transactions will only be for different skins and such and won't affect the balance of the gameplay.
Who's interested?

So it's out now, and I've been playing it a bit. I've never played DotA, so I can't really compare the two, but this is a fair bit of fun.
It definitely needs more maps, but the two that there are work pretty well (I've only played practice games. Maybe there's more if I stop being a wuss?). There's a three lane map and a two lane map, and each can run 1v1 up to 5v5.
Microtransactions are here in full force, as Kuuso mentioned. But it's a dual currency setup, so things like champions and runes can either be bought with the in-game currency (Influence Points, earned by playing games) or the paid currency (Riot Points), while convenience and vanity items can only be bought with Riot Points.
The program setup is kind of weird: When you launch the game, you get the server browser and store, which is an Adobe AIR app. When you actually enter a game, it minimizes the browser client and launches the game proper. I'm not sure why I need to relaunch the game every time I play a round, but it's not too bad.
I'm not sold on the longevity of it yet, but I'm having fun for right now. If you decide to check it out, look me up. I'm Tonamel there too.

I used to play DotA for a long time and I'm enjoying LoL a lot more just because of the improved matchmaking and networking code. Game play wise the balance could use some work to get up to DotA standards but it is still fun. You get a lot of entertainment for free but I wouldn't recommend dropping more than the price of the basic game pack ($25?) if you are inclined to pay for more stuff.
For anyone not familiar with DotA type games this is a 5v5 online arena fight where each player controls one distinct character selected from a large pool of them. Each character is basically a 'hero unit' from an RTS game and they are controlled in the same manner. During the course of a match all of the characters level up and buy more gear until one team is able to destroy their opponent's base.
Tonamel: There are only the two maps. Maybe if they stopped making new skins/champs they could get started on another one :p Regarding the game restart, I remember that Supreme Commander did that as well. It was really annoying for SC but LoL seems to handle the transition a bit more reliably.

I completely dropped LoL, when I realised how much better HoN (Heroes of Newerth) is. I also think it has the edge on LoL for staying nearer to DoTA, yet making bold leaps on certain fronts.
Stuff like no denying and the gratious ganking in LoL make it worse for me. HoN is more versatile and polished.

yeah, I believe lol deviated too much from the dota formula, while hon kept the same but improved on things for the better.
it's a proven formula already, no point in fixing whats not broken.

HoN costs 30 bucks since May 2010. :(
So, anyone up for some LoL goodness? I installed it yesterday and have only played with bots so far. Still, level 5 kru already.

League of Legends is horrible, not least of which because of the fact that it's abbreviated to LOL

LOL from the makers of dota.
HON from the makers of dota.
DOTA2 from the makers of dota.
Now which one of these can claim that they actually haven't had any involvement of any creator of dota.

It could be worse, it could be from Valve or something
...oh

I don't get it. I've never played any DOTA game before so I don't really know anything about HON or DOTA2 or DOTA or much about LOL still and certainly not about who made which one and why.
Anyway, my latest game (and it was 5vs4 for them since we had one AFK) :D:
