Has Valve closed down the demo?
Angel Dust on 19/11/2008 at 02:09
Yep.
Note that the demo isn't the best indicator of how this game really plays anyway. In the full game the levels are much larger and more open than the demo ones, the second one in the demo is in fact a truncated version of one of the full ones, and AI Director if fully unleashed so you really need to use teamwork/tactics. Not to mention the omission of Vs mode. Hopefully Valve will do some of those free weekends so on-the-fence players can get a real taste of the game.

hmmm... I wanna play the game but I would much prefer to try the demo first.
it seems FPS multiplayer games have been somewhat supplanted by MMORPGs.
Is it safe to say UT3 is the de facto king of FPS multiplayer right now? I don't know if Crysis has multiplayer. I love TF2, though it isn't a "purist" fragfest in the way the Quake or Unreal games are.

Bought the full version over Steam (i don't think i've ever payed this much for a PC game!). It's lame that the ad says "10 new weapons!" at the end of the demo, how are they "new" if they're already in the demo? Jerks. Buuut, i liked the demo, the full game is good. If it wasnt for the now aged graphics i'd say Killing Floor (mod for UT2004) in some ways is superior, loved some of the maps in that mod and the maps is (almost) everything in a game like this, it was also a bit more rewarding killing off the zombies in that mod for some reason, maybe because it had more splatter, cant put my finger on it. The animations are great in this game btw, the character models are nice as well.
Looking forward to see new maps, weapons etc. I really hope the community will get very creative with this one!

I guess I should point out that L4D is not being made by Valve.
I still think it's a wasted idea though, especially the levels. It would be much cooler to have entire city(or part of a city), GTA-style, and random spawn point for the human team and weapons. This would create infinite replayability with essentially just one level, and much better atmosphere of being lost since you don't know where the guns/ammo are.
and no stupid running jumping zombies dammit
I think the linear design is there because it's a coop game, it would lead to too much confusion and disagreement (where to go) with a free-roaming game + Source engine can't handle GTA-big levels anyways, its biggest flaw.
I'm not very impressed by the levels either, they're the totaly generic levels you expect in a zombie game. But they'll do, for a while at least.. I'd love to see some of the Killing Floor maps converted to this game.

If you want to get technical, yes it is. Turtle Rock Studios is now known as Valve South.

I wouldn't mind that. It'd be a lot more fun than Killing Floor actually was. But I imagine that prick of a mod director would whine about IP theft or something because he thinks he's an ahtist.

Anyone who says Left 4 Dead is linear hasn't been down in the sewers yet. It's SO easy to get lost down there.

Well I just played my first 4 hours of the full game and beat 2 of the campaigns (Dead Air and Death Toll(?)). It really helps for everyone to have microphones and be friends. But DAMN this game is fun! By the end of the first campaign we were starting to work really well together as a team; without saying anything we'd move in formation, with the shotguns crouched in front and the rifles in back, depending on each other to watch your backs. You get such a great sense of camaraderie once you beat a campaign together.
Easily the best co-op since Serious Sam.

So is it possible to choose what level I'd like to play on? I don't want to skip ahead in the campaign.

Yes. Use the matchmaking system or join an existing dedicated server and call a vote to restart the campaign.
L4D supports dedicated servers + P2P. When attempting to start a game, it searches for a dedicated server to act as a host. If the search fails then you have the option to use P2P.
