Does anyone know why Left 4 Dead is on my Steam queue under gifts?
I haven't got the game (don't really want it) but for free, no problem!
At first I thought it was just the update (for some strange reason) but it's like five gigs. I'm not going to get charged for something if I download it am I? How do I find out?

It may be because of the free Friday.

Oh, so I can play it for the weekend or something?
Nice idea, shame it's a third of my bandwidth quota.

What part of "free Friday" indicates "free Saturday and Sunday too"? :p

You can't get charged for something on Steam without providing your credit card information at the time you're making a purchase.

I got it, and have yet to get credit card ping one. If they do, I kill em.
My opinion thus far is: Excellent good time fun. Though I can see it getting old very quickly, since I'm not one of those people who enjoy playing maps over and over again. For me, games like this are at their most exciting when you're playing them for the first time. Once you get to the point where you're going "okay, once you pass traincar X, the 30 zombie horde arrives SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT", it's lost all its appeal.
Still, it's a good game, and easily worth the $25 asking price. I might go ahead and pick it up anyway.

AFAIK, the zombie hordes are randomized, so no problem there.
I've been playing the free trial, but I found the game much more exciting and intense when I played it in a LAN shop with all my friends cursing and shouting together.

Things aren't totally randomized. I'm playing with an old friend who's been playing the game since it first came out. He pretty much does what I mentioned above, which totally ruins any surprise I've got coming to me. With a group of people fresh to the game, I could see it all being a thrill a second extended bout of intense fun. Playing with old hands though, it's more about teamwork and patience.
So, anyone new to the game want to fire up a match?

It's only scripted in those parts where you have to flip a switch, and everywhere else it's not randomized as such - it's orchestrated by a meta AI (the "Director AI") that controls the ebb and flow of the game. So if you're going through a quiet period, there's inevitably going to be a mob rush any moment soon. That kind of variation makes the game fresh, and I've played the No Mercy campaign over and over again and I still find it really fun.

What servers do you play on, and how's your ping time, Vrap? I've been considering giving the game a go, but if it's as laggy as heck there's not much point purchasing it.
