Update: I've verified that changing the difficulty by in-game vote did NOT work properly!

How is Versus mode with the new playable uncommons?

Played the L4D2 demo online with 3 people who were about the same standard as me. Its ok but I prefer the nighttime setting of L4D and I prefer the grittier production. An unlikely buy at this point unless further playing of the demo proves more fruitful.

On expert difficulty one zombie strike is 10hp, on normal difficulty a strike is 2hp. Raising or lowering the difficulty while the game is in progress won't increase or decrease the horde rate I believe, only the hit/strike rate. One strike by a tank on expert even full health will bring the player down. On normal it will take 3 or 4 strikes by the tank.
This is not an SP game even though the feature is there and the bots work fairly well in my view. They are only a supplement in an online campaign until a user joins the game, keep that in mind when first playing.
I've picked up a few rare tips along the way but so far have not tried them. One is called "Crowning the Witch" which involves pointing the crosshairs on the witches head as she raises her arms to attack (Uzi). Another is to chainsaw the tank the moment he flexes his muscles after a dung/poo toss. ;)

The problem is that L4D (1) is just fine as a single-player game. I mean, it's
better with friends, for sure, but it worked plenty well with bots. L4D2 is decidedly lacking by comparison.

Honestly, the demo's not really going to do it for you, as I felt the same way playing it, but the campaigns in L4D 2 are a lot more varied, and it really is the better overall game. Some stages are at night, some are during the day, and the atmosphere-heavy Heavy Rain campaign introduces AI Director-controlled torrential downpours that limit vision, and it also makes for a cool effect.
This isn't the best sequel of all time. Valve knows this -- that's why they're throwing out discounts and deals on the game like there's no tomorrow ($5 off if you pre-ordered, 25% extra trade-in value towards the game at Gamestop, $30 for Black Friday), but it does deliver the goods with quality campaigns and groovy new boss infected, and I'm having lots of fun.
P.S. I was able to finally resolve all of my crashing issues by scaling the visual settings down to medium (which stinks, because the game otherwise ran just fine on high) -- a tip I'd read on Valve's forums.

Well I'm stuck in Dark Carnival on the rollercoaster, and pissed off with the AI again. I keep dying because they're dragging their moronic heels, and as good as the level is, I really don't want to repeat it over and over like this.
So I'm switching to Easy difficulty. Which I feel faintly irritated at having to do, but hopefully it'll let me enjoy the damned game. And if the AI can't handle the zombies on that setting, I'll have some serious bones to pick with Valve.
In related news, I just bought a copy of the original L4D for the GF (US$7.50 in today's Steam sale), so I'm looking forward to going back to that one.

look, man, are you stuck in some no-internet zone because it hurts me to see anyone actively trying to play L4D in single player. Even playing with random strangers via the matchmaking beats suffering the awful bots. I'm honestly surprised you're enjoying your time at all because I generally find L4D completely unenjoyable with any less than three players.
As for L4D2 it's a huge improvement over the first game and I especially enjoy the new, slightly harded advanced difficulty level. I'm even liking the versus mode now with the new special infected which are a blast to play!!

Dark Carnival eh? I had trouble in the first campaign! But that was the only campaign I played alone. The others I decided to try online.

I think I'm going to skip getting L4D2 for a while. There's no chance in hell you could ever get me to play online because if it's anything like the first game, the playerbase is 100% shite, but the bots are clearly too dumb to make it fun. I'll pick it up when it's on sale or something.
