Which, incidentally, was the whole point of Unreal Tournament for (
http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=440) more than half of those who bought it - "According to Epic producer Tanya Jessen, 50% of Unreal Tournament 2004 owners never went online on PC."
I'd be interested to find out the corresponding statistic for L4D.
Sadly, 'single player' in L4D isn't even equivalent to bot-matches in UT since you can't play as the infected. It's more like bot-match UT with half the weapons disabled.
I can't really bring up any actual anger, but I do understand why people are really pissed about this. As a value proposition, left 4 dead sucked badly. 5 classes, 16 maps all with identical goals, and it was a full $50. Compare that to TF2, which also included HL2:EP2 and portal for that $50, has 9 classes, more then 16 maps with more then just 1 game type, and has been updated heavily....
And really, valve promised a lot more, and since in the past they've delivered, people took them on their word expecting more for their money. When people originally made the buying decision, significant free updates absolutely entered into the value equation. Something like this is more then just a bit of a rip off, it's a pretty big slap in the face to the people who actually trusted valve the most.

One thing that needs to be taken into consideration is that the people working on left 4 dead were(mostly?) originally employees from another company, but it then got absorbed. Or so that is my understanding. Someone correct me if this is off-base. Which means, it isn't exactly valve's fault....
Well, so far I've seen proof that they aren't giving up on L4D1. Valve finally made the game "mod friendly" and updated the VPK tools, and updated the matchmaking.

Turtle Rock were pretty much Valve's sub-contracted B studio.
Chet Faliszek, a Valve employee who wasn't imported from Turtle Rock, pushed ahead with L4D2 despite Gabe warning him that it would alienate part of their audience.

Still doesn't forgive the fact that they promised
new content akin to what TF2 has received.
Do you really need to be reminded of this?:-

the problem with unreal tornament 2004 was that most of the online servers were actually locked, and the free ones suffered from so much lag they were unplayable.

I didn't find this at all. What speed connection were you using? I had 1Mb and it was fine.
And fyi people the SP version of L4D is not redundant at all. Its not as good as with decent, sensible MP partners but it's a lot better than being partnered with twits in MP.

the right move for l4d1 would have been to remove the matchmaking completely. it's the worst piece of code Valve have ever written. suddenly ppl are too stupid to use a normal gamebrowser ? when did that happen ?

Agreed 100%.
