There's also the Tribes games. I know the first one was released for free (and I think the second one might have been too). I played them a couple of times, but never really got into them because I prefer close-quarters combat.

what's your price limit?

Freespace 2 and its dodgy share with friends copyright should work mighty fine as a lan game.
Otherwise, you sure about the steam thing? It would be pretty handy since everyone could bring their steam collection there without actually physically doing it, and could easily be removed afterwards.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is completely free and a jolly good romp, and pretty much guaranteed to run with no hitches.
I'll also second the Quake 3 recommendation, although legality could be an issue unless you buy a copy for each machine. Even though Quake Live is "Free to play", it doesn't mean to say Quake 3 is.
With that in mind, it might be worth having a look at (
http://www.warsow.net/) Warsow, a free game that started out aiming to imitate the Quake 3 feel. I seem to recall it was even able to read Quake 3 maps.
Of course, not everyone wants adrenaline-fuelled, first-person, twitch action, so how about some (
http://www.freeciv.net/) FreeCiv?
Also, I have no idea how you go about even registering interest for it, but the (
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3806-RYSJ-1102) Valve Cybercafe Program might be worth looking into.

Two words: Armagetron Advanced.

Why has no one mentioned Unreal Tournament yet?
It's the perfect LAN game, runs on everything but the oldest of old computers, and you can get it on GOG for 10 bucks.
No, that's Quake 2, also the MP hacks are something like 20MB big and free.

SWAT 3 & SWAT 4 Gold.
gunsmoke on 11/2/2011 at 11:24
SWAT 4 GOLD is at least $20 a piece. SWAT 3 is a BITCH to get running online, I dunno about LAN, but fuck if online MP is the most insane piece of software to get running now.
EvaUnit02 on 12/2/2011 at 19:58
The SWAT 3 servers were shut down by Activision around 2007/2008, when they closed Sierra. He's asking about LAN play, so I assumed that online connectivity would be irrelevant.
