Good idea, but it's more of an issue that the university won't let us unblock the ports required for steam.

Oh god steo I feel your pain. My uni blocks it too on campus housing, so I dont have access to like 50+ games I bought. So goddamn annoying.
Their reasoning is, they dont want kids playing games, they want them studying. But I'm twenty goddamn three, I dont need the school telling me how I should manage my time, thank you very much.

Why are you living in dorms @ 23 years old? I have never heard of that in my life, save for dudes from fucking Somalia or India and shit.

As long as you have SSH port open, you can SSH out and open a tunnel to redirect your steam traffic down that and out into the free internet.
Or use a VPN.
These will require an account on an external computer though.

Scholarship what? Are they paying for your room and board along with tuition if you live on campus?

Around here, there's a lot of student accommodation (supposedly cheapish?) right next to the college, and while they all have Internet access, everything is blocked there - Steam, Battle.net, misc game ports, torrents, etc.. It makes me wonder how they can call it student accommodation with a straight face while making it so student-unfriendly. I'm glad I never had to live there.

Yes, university halls in the UK can be extremely fascist. A friend of mine used to be in halls at Queen Mary, where you weren't allowed to smoke, not just indoors but anywhere on campus - and it was a good five minute walk to get off-campus from his room. Fortunately the rule wasn't that strictly enforced, but he did get shouted at by security guards a lot. I've been lucky enough to avoid most of the ridiculousness of university accommodation though.
And I certainly wouldn't say university accommodation is particularly cheap, either.

Pretty much.
steo - Belfast NI here, holla! Also you brits are fucking paranoid about fires you know that?

My school is a nerd school. If they blocked Steam, the campus would be on fire within ten minutes. It seems utterly ridiculous that a campus would block certain applications- is there really much of a liability issue in regards to piracy?
