I know this is all hypothetical, but any talk of money exchanging hands really goes against the spirit of FM creation.

my name is Brethren and I will never post to the www again. I have seen the error of my ways and am full behind sly's new sporty ride.

The spyder's in the mail, Sly. They were out of blue though - it's hot pink.
Oh, and I didn't include the keys. Those get mailed once I get those last few lines for DCE you've been sitting on for a few months now. :p

I wonder if I could make a few bucks for running an FM contest...

One of the conditions of getting the editor Dromed was that no one was allowed to make money off of missions made with Dromed. I can understand if someone makes money selling objects for example and they're usable on a multitude of games, but trying to make money off of fan mission work crosses the agreement and respect line we have with the LGS staff that released Dromed. Personally I would not accept money for doing anything Dromed related anyway. I don't think offering to pay people would compel them to start making more missions. I would think it would have more to do with having time in the first place to make missions rather than think time needs to be compensated.

I'm pretty sure from a legal standpoint you could probably just about get away with "Enjoyed this mission? Why not dubiously donate some unrelated cash via paypal? Click here!"
From an everything else standpoint - nooope. It's about the love of the game and wanting to tell great stories. Taking money for it would just feel wrong. It kind of adds an obligation - if I make a free fan mission and people don't like it, I can say "Whatever, fair enough, don't play it." If you've taken money for it, there'd be a certain expectation that it's worth the money, and that's a subjective can of worms in itself.
As much as I'm all for Sly getting a supercar, I'd rather have the freedom to make stupid design decisions out of the blue without having anyone to answer to. That's a freedom you can't buy! :D

I agree with that

...but what about the recent contest (the best FM/author, etc)? Was it illegal too?

Fascinating to hear everyone's take on this. As an economist, so these answers differ wildly from my own views. That said, it seems like the overwhelming answer is that this would be both ineffective and illegal (perhaps even unethical).
Thanks for your input guys!
