"Christ you're clueless, LAN parties are largely about the social experience (and sharing files)."
As I said, pointless. Back when I was really into PC gaming, I spent pretty much all of my free time playing TFC, Unreal, Quake or Q2CTF. I don't think I watched one hour of television in those few years. Why bother? All I wanted to do was play the game... constantly

Wait wait. did lost_soul seriously just admit he considers SOCIALIZING pointless?
This explains so, so, so much....

Suggesting that a Lan party is the same as active socialising is a little silly in my opinion. In reality its no different from playing online mixed with playing in a room with your friends. It isn't the same as going outside and meeting people, you're just changing the scenery from one greasy sweat filled room to a larger one.
RE:topic
I think a lot of people getting all shocked/offended by this still regard women as dainty delicate little flowers that require their protection. Actual girl gamers are just as bad as the guys with the petty retarded insults flying constantly out of their mouths. Also, some people just seem to like getting offended so they can have something to moan about.
Barring girls from an event like this is about all they can do since they can't just politely tell uber nerds to fuck up and behave since it doesn't work. While I'm sure the majority of the guys there would be reasonable in their fuckwittery, there are always some who spout, for example, racist shit, but they can't very well ban blacks/jews from an event, but separating things for men and women has been the norm for centuries and even often appreciated by the ladies as it often provides them with a calmer environment to enjoy what they love.

As far as I can tell, the folks over at an "FPS forum I frequent" are at the pinnacle of an Arms Race to insult each other to the farthest imaginable extent. They have hacked each others' accounts or retain small trivial details from forum posts from ages ago. It all seems to be about offending each other to get into the spirit of playing a game where you "shoot your opponent".
Rather than ban the ladies, they should just inform them that antagonizing and "offending opponents to the worst imaginable degree" is part of the culture.

You know, if anyone brings up the 90's, and what we most miss about that lost decade from long ago, my first response is always "the chilibowl". For those of you not in the know, a chilibowl is a particularly stupid haircut, characterized by what I could best describe as alot of hair on top, shaved on the sides. Sorta like a tonsure, but without the bald spot along the top. The end result is it looks like the eponymous chili bowl.
See, I always thought it was a stupid haircut, and the people who willing chose to wear their hair in such a fashion were complete idiots (no offense to anyone here who had a chilibowl back in the day, you fuckwits). To show my disdain for it, everytime I'd see one out in public, I'd stop whatever it was I was doing, poiint and shout "CHILIBOWL". It'd usually embarrass the unfortunate person to the point where they'd shave their head right on the spot so as to mitigate a bit of the shame I brought upon them.
It's been at least 12 years since I've last done that. The chilibowl as a popular hairstyle has come and gone. The fun I had at someone else's expense? Nothing more than a memory, an occasional twinge of sweet nostalgia. I assumed those days were long since over. Until a few days back, while I was happening through the mall.
I saw one.
A chilibowl.
Someone was actually wearing a chilibowl. "My God", I thought, "after all these years, I now have yet another chance to chilibowl someone". It was too good to pass up. I could feel the urge just...WELLING...inside of me. I take a deep breath, point my finger, and bellow it out...
CHILIBOWL!
...next thing I know, I'm getting my ass thoroughly handed to me by a bunch of militant feminist lesbian bulldykes...
