The legend of the good thief who robbed everybody but grudgingly saved thousands of lives on more than one occasion, too!
Old taffers never die, they just steal away into that eternal night.

If I had my way and were to write the end of our favorite thief, it would be sort of like this:
After a life of thievery and saving the city, there would be that last job that told him that it, in fact is time to retire. Aching bones, not as nimble as he used to be but with enough life left to enjoy. He would collect on the favors he was owed and repay those he owed to others. He would probably tell the Keepers of his retirement and like a half seen shadow slip from the view of all in the city.
It would be nice to think that his retirement would be a happy one. After all, he must have hidden a small fund away to help in this eventuality. Maybe he could find a quiet village with a stout cottage, maybe even a woman. After all he may have thought that what he said years ago when helping Basso (I find feelings gets in the way of my money) may have been the words of a younger less wise Garrett. Now older with so many experiences under his belt, he would see things differently. Someone he could care for and be cared by. In time the sound of little feet running around the small cottage. Teaching his kids the true meaning of right and wrong, maybe even a little keeper training thrown in. He would not teach them to be thieves because I don’t think he would want that life for his children, just the knowledge to have an edge in an unforgiving world. He would consider there fate would be in there own hands ultimately.
Evenings by the fire, children wide eyed, hearing stories told by there father of a shadowy rogue thwarting the plans of megalomaniacs and demented nobles, wizards and ghosts, hidden treasure and ancient relics being found. He would show then the things he had collected over the years. Maybe the Horn of Quintas would be on the mantle, Baffords scepter, used for many years as a fire poker, resting in the grate. Hours of fun chasing the little ones around with his mechanical eye held high in his hand.
Years from then, when night was finally to fall for the last time, He would be surrounded by grandchildren, children and wife. There too, would be Keepers and old friends, Basso perhaps. Maybe even a Hammerite priest to acknowledge the service he had been to them and the city. There he would pass with the faint glimmer of a smile on his lips.
His burial would have all the rights and wards that hammerite doctrine would allow and his name would go into the Keeper Annals as a true brethren, but not a betrayer.
The End.
Not a bad ending I suppose, by the gods, if I go out like that I would be happy.
The only thing is, I think Garrett will never die. As long as people play Thief he will go on. I don’t have any plans to stop playing soon, myself.
All the best People.

Garrett, I think, is the only game protagonist that won't die, the Thief franchise, a game made on a budget, very small development team(s) that eventually became defunct, not a very well know game amongst the "true" gamers, and yet, this small but VERY committed community has managed to keep it and Garrett alive for over 10 years.
I don't think many other games are like that. :D

I'd imagine he would die the same as he always does... Thinks he knows better by judging how concealed he is himself rather than looking at the lightgem, ultimatly makes a loud "Gaaahhhh", followed by a skull appearing. He is then shown his successes and failures in life before being given the strange option to either Show Stats, Replay or Exit.

Or, probably, he becomes an old fart, sitting all the time in the Crippled Burrick, until he receives a very serious scorching in an unlikely incident involving a fire arrow and a burrick, which he doesn't have looked at :p The wound festers, and for the pain he brews up a 'shroom tea, which he incidentally overdoses, and dies smiling in his sleep, dreaming about Basso's sister and Viktoria. :cheeky:

One day Garrett went to see Bonehoard again from nostalgia. He slipped at the rope arrow in the beginning and whoops, broke his leg, couldn't get anywhere else and after 5 days of horrible sounds from the zombie down there (he puked several times due to how disgusting the zombie sounded) he finally dehydrated...
Ok, maybe that wasn't Garrett, dunno. But he sure had a nice robe on!

Garrett goes on a simple job to get a ruby from a nearby manor. He finds it, but then a living doll jumps out of some luggage and kills him. He then spends some time in limbo replaying the last moments over and over..... only to realize that he's been dead for 10 years, and finally moves on.

Garrett reaches for a cabinet door; it swings open at lightning speed and assassinates him.
I'm sorry, that's the Source engine.
I'd go with the rope arrow debacle, though. It's happened too many times to count. Either that or attempting to surf a corpse off a roof in Life of the Party, accidentally slipping off the corpse, and crash-landing.
