iOS/Android and Facebook games... *yawn* Nothing to see here, move along.
Good for indie developers. Have success, crossover and start making games for core gaming platforms and then we'll talk.

Awww, I hope Bungie will still make some games of their own. Don't know what to make of this. Do indie developers really need some big brother backing them up these days? Isn't publishing your games on Facebook/iOS AppStore quite affordable? What are Bungie gonna be doing? (letting indiedevs use their engines? thinking positive thoughts?)

In addition to technical help + advice, giving grants made from some of their MS + Activision money hats, one would assume.
Hopefully they don't influence these indie developers to have writing as turgid as theirs.

Halsey: (voice-over) "It didn't take long for Reach to fall. Our enemy was ruthless. Efficient. But they weren't nearly fast enough."

Halsey: (voice-over) "For you had already passed the torch. And because of you, we found Halo, unlocked its secrets, shattered our enemy's resolve. Our victory - your victory - was so close... I wish you could have lived to see it."
...
Halsey: (voice-over) "But you belong to Reach. Your body, your armor - all burned and turned to glass. Everything...except your courage. That, you gave to us. And with it, we can rebuild."
Fucking Christ. Noble Six was one the most blatant Mary Sues that I've seen in a game for a while.

Waiting for someone to write new Braid/Angry Birds then taking a cut.
Good luck and all that, but this is about as tedious newsflash as I could possibly imagine. Oh well. I raise a nostalgic virtual glass to the genius that was Myth,
Motoko Oni, and yes - the first Halo.

I put mobile & social games practically in the same box as Minesweeper & Solitaire ... largely a reflection of the sad state of the whole culture.
But I don't have any inherent bias against the platforms or types of games themselves. Have there been what you could fairly call hardcore games on mobile devices or social networks? No reason you couldn't have a smaller scale version of games like Morrowind or Vampire Maquarades on an Android or iPad.

Gameloft have made a cottage industry out of producing core gaming sensibility titles for the mobile market... too bad that most of them are blatant clones of basically every popular mainstream game under the sun.

So the handheld market is like PC gaming in the 80's. If the major publishers are going to ignore a platform, people are going to sell clones of their products.

In the name of pedantry and pointless semantics I`d like to reserve the word "handheld" for "proper" consoles like NDS/PSP/GBA etc... and "mobile" for phones and tablets.
From my experience it`s very hard to find any decent game for mobiles - mostly because of the controls. The only good titles seem to be those specifically coded for touchscreen (does not include SNES on iThings :/). Ok, maybe some some slow puzzle/rpg games can be still amusing, but anything actiony is fun for few minutes...then frustrating.

Yeah there are tons of clones on the iOS devices. Angry Birds, tower defence, line-drawing games, stacking-games... pretty much any succesful game on the iOS is gonna spawn a bunch of imitators. I guess because it's so easy for anyone to get their games in the AppStore there's never a shortage of people hoping to make a quick buck by copying a popular formula.
And yeah, actiontitles mostly don't suit the iPad/iPhone well. There are exceptions: I've had hours of fun with Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior and 2XL Trophylite Rally for instance. But the iPad game I've spent the most time with is without a doubt Super Stickman Golf. No shit, this game is incredible. I recommend anyone with an iDevice to give it a try. :)
