So I'm sitting at home with an old 32" CRT that we use for TV and the PS3.
Thing is the res on the games for PS3 is, err, rubbish. Ok the games still look good, no one can deny that, but the problem is in the details. For example; the GUI in Assassins Creed - I can't see it properly, can't tell exactly what is going on in it. Wipeout - same thing. I can't see the icons clearly enough really. The online store is really hard to use because the text is so unclear.
I don't have any visual problems, other people who've played over at ours find the same issues. I've messed with the res and the display settings but I'm using the SCART connection and it just never gets great. A friend has a 37" Samsung LCD (7 series I think but don't quote me) for PS3/Bluray/DVDs and everything looks faaaantastic.
So I'm in the market for a big LCD and wanted to know how other current gen console owners find things and what they are using. At the moment I'm leaning towards a Sony W4000, W4500 or even a W5500 (though the reviews for the W5500 aren't so good and the 4000 series seems to still have the best reviews).
Any thoughts fellow console owners?
PS. I have a Samsung Syncmaster 204BW 20" Widescreen for the PC and it's nice enough.

That's your problem. SCART (including RGB) is a fossilised fucking dinosaur, it doesn't support HD signals (nor SD progressive scan) full stop. Only Component AV, HDMI/DVI-D and VGA are valid options.
I run my 360 off of VGA, sharing my PC's monitor (16:10 1680x1050 22" Samsung Syncmaster 226BW) and it's all hunky dory. My PS3 via HDMI is hooked up to some Samsung "Full HD" 1080p LCD in the lounge, I dunno the exact specs.
If you're gonna use a DVI-D/HDMI with a LCD monitor, you'll need one that supports HDCP. 360 has full support for VGA and 16:10 resolutions, PS3 supports neither. 16:10 is narrower than 16:9 (the native AR for both consoles), so you'll get mild letterboxing on a 360 and barely noticeable vertical stretching with PS3.

Use Component cables with the Wii, a lot of games support 480p/576p progressive scan (a number of NTSC import Gamecube titles too).

Mine's a bit older, but I've got the KDL-40S4000, and it's fantastic. Didn't cost me too much either, as I picked it up in a sale over Christmas.
It makes playing console games a lot more enjoyable :)

Sidenote - consider the whole 120Hz thingie, if you think you may be interested in stereoscopic viewing. With nVidia on the market and Ubisoft boasting with Avatar, (
http://www.i4u.com/article25133.html) "the first 3d stereoscopic game", I wouldn't be surprised to see this sort of tech pick up and support coming for it as standard in the next generation of consoles.

Susceptibility to image burn-in worse than CRT ever was, fuck yeah.

Meh, I can get a 3D TV if that tech ever takes of at a later date.
What is this burn in business with Plasma TVs and why choose one over and LCD?
Tbh the Samsung my friend has would be great but I a. am gay for Sony and since I have a PS3 I like the idea of them working together and b. his is a 37" and this is oneupmanship dagnammit!

I've mistakenly left my GTA4 on the menu screen for over an hour and it wasn't even noticable after a period of time, so, yeah. You'd have to be fucking braindead to get burn-in worth a damn.
If you're getting a PS3, SE, I recommend a decent plasma (I have a 48" 1080p panasonic) since you actually get nice black tones and a big plus of the PS3 is blu-rays which happen to feature lovely crisp black tones.

This.
I have a 42" 1080p LG in my living room, and the Wii hooked up with AV cables was awful, same things described above. Couldn't read the online store etc. Picked up the Component cables and things rock now. But I still haven't tried gamecube games on it since the switch.
