Edit2: To be clear though, there's still NLP involved, just reverse from what you'd think. It's getting Pegg to believe he didn't write BMX. That was the very clever part of it, and the props and cues all helped sell the illusion.
My understanding is that suggestion only works on individuals who subconsciously wish to be controlled...not entirely unlike the explanation of how the jedi trick only "works on the weak minded". A hypnotist's show works because in any large audience you're guaranteed to find a few people who are highly receptive to suggestion, but if the trick involves a randomly selected individual there's no guarantee it will work.
