level 2 [subway hostage] A non-violent solution. - by cyberfalcon77

in my opinion i reckon they put a LOT more effort into liberty island + the first visit to UNATCO HQ than anywhere else (not that they didnt put effort anywhere else). It has more thought out conversations, objectives (in terms of how you complete them), and pretty good overall design (didnt they make that from satellite images and visits to the island?)
The rest of the game seems to get worse and worse after liberty island apart from the brilliant plot bits, it gets slightly better at hong kong, but then slumps a bit. Right now im at the cathedral after the chateux, so i dont know if it picks up again or not, paris wasnt bad but not that good
but im a bit off subject here.... so ill stop

I believe it can tell the difference between a kill and a stun, but it won't tell the difference between your attacks and those of NPCs. I specifically prodded everyone at Castle Clinton, but since Navarre and the rest came in, they got blown up, and I took some heat for it.
Since this time around I am playing with cheats enabled, I decided to try some crazy stuff that normally wouldn't be done if you were really investing effort into playing. One of those things included killing the good folks in the catacombs. Amazingly enough, it doesn't affect further game play. Is ther eanywhere else where one could blatantly pop a cap in someone's ass, yet not have it really register in the game?
Oh, as for the subway, I tranq everyone form the air ducts. It's the best way to do it, IMO.

Absynthe - If you go in the entrance covered by the metal crates and tranq or prod everyone, 95% of the time the game will not register them as kills and Sam Carter will give you the weapon mod when you return to UNATCO HQ. You'll know as soon as you approach Anna Navarre. If she thinks you were too gentle, you did it correctly.
There is a trigger--which I have yet to figure out--that gives you the violent outcome, even though you have 1) gone in the covered entrance, and 2) not killed anyone.

To return to the original poster's question, it certainly is possible to resuce the hostages without interacting with the NSF troops.
Like someone has already suggested, you need to crawl out from the vent near where the hostages are held. You need to talk to them, open the train door, then order them aboard.
However, there is one NSF guy who may spot you as he patrols up and down the platform. To avoid him, hide behind the pillar then talk to the hostages when he has his back turned. I think it helps to get through the dialogue quickly since the game doesn't pause during a conversation.

Yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. This time through, I'm playing a knife specialist, so I decided to go in through the back and kill only what was needed of me (little did I realize I had to kill all three terrorists inside because of a slight miscalculation in tactics). Anyways, I went back the way I came and Anna still told me that I was too gentle with them! And the time before, I prodded everyone down and she congratualed me! What gives?

Shadowhawk - I don't know. I thought it might have something to do with the UNATCO troops coming in through the gate, but the last time I played, they came through the gate and I still was given the nonviolent outcome. I wonder if it matters whether Navarre draws a weapon and/or comes through the gate. I'll replay that part and let you know if I figure it out.

No problem. Makes no difference to me, though. With this character, I'm not too concerned about getting boxed for making too many kills.
One question for the melee weapons, though. What is the best point to aim for with each weapon? Knife, I have found that a shot to the head pales to the damage that can be done by a good body slash. Kinda annoying considering I wanted to be the silent assassin, running around slitting everyone's throat. I have heard that batons are best to the head, and I have idea for the crowbar. I'm thinking about playing the other melee characters as well.

Shadowhawk - I know the prod is best used on the torso--the mid to lower back is very good (it even works on MJ12 Commandos.) The baton to the back of the head will take someone down with one hit. I never used the crowbar as a weapon, but I think that it would be the same as the baton.

I've had better luck with the prod in the head. I can almost never knock the guy out in one prod, so i always go for the head after I've stunned him. As for doing this on MJ12 Commandos...never tried really. Maybe I should one of these days...

Then why the heck am I supposed to hit guys in the torso with the knife??? Makes no sense to me...
Conversely, when I played a character with only DTS, I had no problem whatsoever making kills no matter where I hit them. MJ12 Commando? I whacked him in the right leg and he keeled over, dead.
