This thread is nullified by the fact that everyone knows to fucking wait to play Bethesda games until they are;
A: patched
B: modded
Your level-scaling issue had been fixed in a couple weeks in Oblivion.

Exactly the reason that I've only just bought New Vegas. I seriously pity anyone who bought a Bethesda game on console.

As said, Oblivion's problem wasn't so much that level scaling is bad as it is that it was a Bethesda game. Frankly, their approach to designing game mechanics reeks of "Fuck it, the modders will fix it."
As for the mechanic itself - in addition to FO3 and NV, both KoTORs, both Mass Effects, Alpha Protocol and Jade Empire all used level scaling heavily, and no one minded it. It actually works out pretty well most of the time.
Hell, are there any other RPGs where level scaling was a fuck up on the level of Oblivion? The only other game I can think of that fucked it up that badly was Homeworld 2, and that's not even an RPG.

Pump some time into Final Fantasy Tactics. It fucked up that game too, as I mentioned earlier.

Final Fantasy 8 was ruined by the levelling system. Well, it was ruined by a lot of things, but the levelling system was a big offender.

Was there scaling in that one? I remember random battles getting extremely hard towards the end of the game.

It was the first FF game to have scaling. Most players didn't notice it too much though until later on in the game, mostly because they'd become adept at junctioning magic and were far beyond most creatures regardless of level.

I'm not sure whether to feel honoured or insulted that I've become the TTLG poster boy for console-itis.
Though I suppose my constant whining didn't help things.

No, and if there's any place for level scaling it would be a jRPG because then you don't need to grind for hours just to get over Boss X.
