Level scaling OR Don't play RPGs then girlie man. - by SubJeff

To be honest there were heaps of other problems that added to it in Oblivion. Fighting scaled enemies was even more boring in the endlessly repetitious and empty enviroments. Caves and especially the Oblivion realms, eeeurgh.

Grinding is a massive problem in any game. It's lazy design in the same way as level scaling, only now the player is scaling themselves up to match the challenges. But aside from that, the knowledge of grindable skills is going to affect how you play to some degree whether you admit it or not, even if it's minor stuff like jumping for no reason or playing the speechcraft game with someone just because you're already talking to them.
I don't see how any of these are a problem, unless the entire game relies on you bunny-hopping around or re-doing the speechcraft game over and over and over.

Haha, what? Something's not a problem unless the whole game revolves around it? I'm not saying the entire game is broken, I'm saying it's annoying when a game gives you incentives to do tedious, repetitive, or just plain stupid stuff.
90% of much of what we do in gaming is repetitive; "plain stupid" and "tedious" are in the eye of the beholder. Just because you *can* grind doesn't mean that it's the only feasible thing - and if the game doesn't offer any other option that's more entertaining, then that's the problem. If you can gain the skills by questing, hunting, faffing about in the world etc. as much as you can by bunny hopping from one encampment to the next, then I honestly don't see the problem if some people do the latter rather than the former.

Sigh. Look, when you start making sense and stop foaming at the mouth at what you perceive people as saying, let me know.

I just read that Skyrim is to have levelling too, but more like the version seen in Fallout 3 than the version in Oblivion.
... though, remembering what was promised for the AI in Oblivion before its release, complete with the video of that woman and her poor dog... anything Bethesda say this early in development needs to be taken with a very large grain of salt.

And more towards daggerfall also with the quest system they're talking about.
Still, they've finally delivered with the visuals, so I'm having high hopes they'll actually deliver on the gameplay itself.
I kind of see skyrim having the things they wanted to finish for oblivion, but never had the timebudget for.

You guys are all on crack. I played Oblivion beginning to end on both PC and XBox without any mods and I never even noticed scaling. I'd actually be hard pressed to describe what it is to someone else. The AI always seemed about perfect for my skill levels, and it never got too easy. The corresponding loot and items they guarded was also about right. The AI also seemed incredibly well balanced in Bioshock as well (iirc someone said BS used scaling). Based on those two games, I'd say whatever scaling is, it works. What am I missing?

You'll never understand fett, You just play games because its fun. A REAL gamer, a TRUE gamer will first find fault and come up with a myriad of reasons to NOT play a game.

Do I have to blog about it too?

You don't have to be a True Pro Master Gamer to know there's something wrong with being the Grand Champion of the Arena at level 1.
