At night, I open the windows out into the echoless dark where a dog lies curled in a puddle of yellow light that's dripped from the sodium vapour lamp above him
I fold the events of the day gone by down into a single mercury thread that thrums dissonant in my brain
It vibrates so fast it begins to glow. Red-hot. Cauterising.
I shoot. The figure bucks in the dark, spraying arcs of sweat that momentarily prism the monitor-light before they slap in a torrential downpour against my skin
Flash-flood
Gone in a flash
There's blood everywhere
But it's okay - you're okay, I'm okay
we're all
forums bloom luminescent
whorls flaking white petals
like glowing troll dandruff
down
we're all
Yeah, it's okay. Really. Go to sleep, honey.
I shoot. Someone yells. An arm thuds meatily to the floor, rolls away into the abyss. The staccato cacophony of fists beating on metal in my head (out of my head) intensifies, wails of anguish and indignation boiling the paint from the walls, the door gives in, splinters as a horrendous face pushes through, and...
the light
turns off
in the dark, there's nothing to it
I am dragged and beaten down
then finally collapse, and
a second ticks by and
Daylight explodes against my eyelids.

Night here isn't as dramatic as others have posted. No sound at all but the sporadic car passing and the occasional sound of the wind chimes next door. The funeral home across the street is empty, but lit up brighter than any house on the block. Many nights there's a police cruiser sitting in the parking lot there just waiting...
I often used to stay up till 7:00 or 8:00 am, but now I force myself to go to sleep now (4:00 in the morning,) and wake up about 12:00pm. As a younger man, in the winter around here, I used to go days without even seeing sunlight. It's corny, but I also meditate every night before bed, or else it'd be an hour or more of laying in bed until I actually fall asleep.
