greetings fellow sneakey people! last time i played dark proj. i had a 233 classic/voodoo3 and 98se....recently a copy of gold came my way. now i am running xp sp1. i have read the faq thus:
" How do I install Thief on Windows 2000 or Windows XP?
Go to Start, then Run, then type d:\setup.exe -lgntforce, where d:\ is your CDrom/DVDrom drive. (note: that's -lgntforce, lowercase "L". If you're unsure, copy and paste it from here.) This problem arises because Win2K and WinXP are based on the NT kernel, which had DirectX support which was flaky at best. Thief needs DirectX to run, so, when the installer sees the NT kernel, it assumes that the game isn't going to be able to run and quits the installation. The -lgntforce switch tells the installer to ignore the NT kernel and install anyway...
no luck! just opens the cd and nothing.
apologies for such an old question...can anyone help please:confused:

To assist, one must first understand. Have you read the bright red wiki with answers to potential problems?

Never mind them baz55, their hostilities towards you is just a way of greeting a newcomer to these forumns. What DarthMRN and others are practically saying is "Hi baz55, how's it hangin?" :p
They love you really :cheeky:

Ouch!
I came across as some noob-harassing crap bag?! I was sure I had saved myself with the welcome at the end, and the indirect grammar complaint!
Look what this forum has done to me!!!

BASIC GRAMMAR SKILLS MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU USE THEM
now to treat you like you're simple.
what drive is the CD you're putting it in? is it d, or e, or something else?
have you tried running setup.exe WITHOUT -lgntforce? because i have XP and i can do it.

after entering the command, it takes a veeeeeeeeeery long time on some systems to start up
it took an hour to load up for me
it's a very old version of the installer
if you check from the taskmanager, you might see it there, sitting comfortably, doing nothing for a long period of time
