Why kick in the door when he's already picked the effing lock?
Just imagine Garrett lockpicking a door, and when it's almost done geeting his sword and bash the door open. :p Yes, this burglar isn't the smartest. If I was him I would ran to the lady and her daughter, give them one hit with the blackjack and they would fall unconscious. Right?

But what about the guards? They would've came out of doors from the basement and start bashing that thief senseless.

The sound is the same but the thief definitely wasn't garrett.
QFT And I thought Eric was a sound designer made his own sounds? I wonder if they're just 'stock' available in the business sounds...

He made sounds, but quite a lot of what
Thief uses for basic interactivity is taken from sound libraries. He did more mixing and filtering than creating sounds from scratch. The vocal- and keyboard-based sounds are definitely in-house.
This link might become dead soon, and if it is, when you get a chance to watch the trailer for (

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, you will hear the sound of a door unlocked at :49, straight from the same source as for Thief when Helena Bonham Carter's Queen of Hearts opens the double-doors.

Ah, must have been rats... with swords... wearing large boots... swiping jewellery... coughing loudly...
'Probably just a big rat with a big sword..'

But the bashing-the-door-sound wasn't from Thief :D:D
