(
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-08-08/fresh-riots-spread-across-london/2829730) WTF?
There was some dust up on the weekend in Tottenham over police violence. Some guys burned a bus and trashed a few buildings. The victim's family said they didn't want that to happen, but it grew out of a low key picketing of a police station.
It seemed like that was all done with, but yesterday I was checking out the twitter feed of this guy I know who just moved from here to Leyton and it was just endless updates and checking in and warnings etc. At first I was checking the times thinking it must have been about spillover from the other night. But nope. He and his mates were in their flats going "Yep they're in the high street now. " Jesus. a car's on fire up the road." "Stay off the streets. Don't look funny at any cops".
And it's not just in the north east. It's all over the place.
It's all gone about 5 days into ...28 days later.
What the hell is going on locals?

I heard the emotion in one ladies voice as she described barely getting out of her burning apartment above a rug store and was moved by it. Then she said they were stealing the rugs and as horrible as it was I couldn't help but ask what sort of lame rioter steals a rug. You sort of figure the Sony store or Footlocker but a rug? Only in England.
I figure it's a bunch of unemployed youths with a lot of angst and disaffection in need of stitches and a night in hospital but surely we have a local Londoner left to describe it? Onion Bob maybe? At any rate it's time to try out the new taser nets.

I would have gone for 'Panic on the streets of London' personally.
I live in Waltham Forest and everything's closed. Rioting and looting is spreading to non-deprived areas too. The good news is the riots will have to stop as the rioters can't buy any food!

It's insane. Happening everywhere overnight and it's spread to other cities.
Why is this happening? On another forum I frequent they're blaming the welfare state - these are people with nothing to lose because they've never had anything or worked for anything.

the welfare state thing is an interesting problem, so you have generations of people who have been pretty much unemployed/living on welfare their whole lives? So once they bring in the army and quite things down, what happens then, the problem still remains.

We raise our cups to another civil war and hereby lay our claims to the throne of England!

Saying that the welfare state causes this seems a bit of a stretch to me. If anything, you'd think that never having "worked for anything" would make their natural tendency to just sit at home instead of get mad and on the streets.
Of course, there's also an argument that its because, [sic] "A generation bred on a diet of excessive consumerism and bombarded by advertising ", because when society breaks down people can just take what society as taught them to want.
