Yeah, it would be much more fun if you had to follow traffic rules exactly, stop at red lights, not go the wrong way, never bump another car without having to stop and exchange insurance details and so on.
It worked ok in Mafia.

I'm talking about using the sidewalk instead of the road while conversing about "how I feel in the USA" with my girl-friend. I'm talking about running over 50 cops on my way to the mission... ...If you can't design your gameworld to support a "serious" story, don't do it.
Its supposed to be over the top you tool. I suppose you'd prefer it if every conversation you had whilst in a car was cut because you crashed into something you shouldn't have? Yeah, that'd be great.
And you'd have to try pretty hard to run over 50 cops on the way to a mission. It'd be a concerted effort so either you're an idiot for doing it on purpose or an idiot for mentioning it. Either way you're an idiot.
Look, I'm all for legit complaints about a game but these aren't it.
@Moyer. Sounds painful.

In mothra's defense, while I think he's exaggerating his point so much it becomes nonsensical (unless you're aiming for Yahtzee-style satire), there is a disconnect between the gameplay and the more serious story they've tried with GTA IV. There is something schizophrenic about playing a mass murderer (even if you don't go for murdering rampages in Liberty City for a lark, you do create a lot of havoc even if you're just playing the story missions) who is then given lines about guilt, redemption and wanting to be a good person. I'd agree with mothra that the game doesn't support its characterisation of Nico Bellic (his words and his actions diverge almost comically, yet we're supposed to take what he says seriously - which only works if you're willingly blind to what Nico does throughout the game), but I'm glad they tried and I'm looking forward to games that achieve this sort of more serious tone more consistently and convincingly.

That's his style. He's toned it down considerably, but every now and then when he gets onto his soapbox to deliver a righteous ranting, it's so raw and so sharp it grinds the two-day stubble right off my chin.

this.
although I said it better :) - pantomime style
the game doesn't give you any way to play it according to "character", at least not in a way that is "fun" to use your words. you see, ppl always tend to do what they get away with. it's also the appeal of games (and especially gta1-3). so if you create a game without rules and then try to tell a moral story inside it without any ingame repercussions for the character........bad design. sit down. next one. repeat the class or leave the school. big large gaping hole making everything else look ridiculous. so just don't do it.
Also, if those guys in GTA4 were my relatives and "friends" I would change cities immediately. Sorry, Nico is just another stupid thug with the excuse of a life he likes to philosophize but not DO anything about. He's the one I normally shoot in the hundreds in the COD games without thinking. He's the one that gets always respawned to annoy you even more.
I like GTA4 for dicking around outside of missions. that's what it's good for.

I have GTA4 on my 360 because it was free. I've played about 30 minutes of it. That was enough to tell me I didn't give a shit- especially since the driving physics are 100% bullshit.

For those of you who played GTA IV: looking back at it, did you enjoy it?
No

Did the more serious storyline work for you, or do you wish they had put more of an emphasis on silly fun?
Nope, You can't reconcile how Niko racks up a bodycount in the hundreds with endless moaning about how he's being forced into crime and how he really wants to do good.

Are you at all interested in the expansions, provided they are ever released on PC?

And what would you want for a wholly new GTA game (other than London, that is )?
A story that doesn't revolve around stereotyped pastiche characters and Rockstar's pathetic attempts to cram as much obscenity, cussing, racism, drugs, and debauchery as possible simply for the sake of generating sales through controversy.
Scots Taffer on 8/12/2009 at 03:56
I didn't get it for the PC, but for the PS3.
It's probably the most convincingly realised gameworld I've ever played in, littered with tiny details that add immeasurably to the immersion and the city dynamics work really well to give it that "living breathing" vibe.
Did I enjoy the game?
Fuck no.
It got brutally boring quickly and the amount of mind-numbing shit they want you to do as friend maintenance was a joke, most broken mechanic for a game like this I've ever seen.
I didn't even get to the supposedly really great mission that apes Heat. I think I gave up after my third straight CHASE THIS GUY AND KILL HIM mission.
Dresden on 8/12/2009 at 04:31
Yeah I enjoy it for pretty much the same reason as you've stated, Thirith. Far from original, but it's simply a fun shooter. I just replayed it and TLatD before getting Gay Tony.
Looking back though, I don't think the game would've been nearly as well received if it didn't have that ragdoll/animation blending. That's really the only original thing it had, but it was amazing seeing Niko fly through the air with that.
And whenever I hear that radio ad of the woman saying "Yeah! Harassing and insulting strangers over the internet is totally what my generation is about" reminds me of TTLG.
