I only played the Mafia demo and it didn't grab me, so I missed out on what people seem to agree is a fantastic game. Perhaps I should check out whether there's a budget version, so I can find out whether I'd like the full game before Mafia 2 comes out.
I finally finished GTA IV yesterday. Liked the ending, although getting into that helicopter almost killed off my Space bar. Don't think I'd want to continue with the side quests after that ending, but if/when the expansions come out for PC I'll definitely check them out. After a good rest from GTA, mind you.
P.S.: I'm surprised how much the cover mechanism changed the big gunfight sequences for me. If I went back to San Andreas now, chances are I'd miss being able to run towards a car, press Q and slide into cover, or sidle up to the side of a building, peek around and pop out to shoot a few guys in the head.

Mafia is one of the best PC games made, Thirith.

It boggles the mind that Take 2 still haven't made it available on any digital distribution services. There aren't any issues running it on modern hardware and OSes, is there?
A few months ago I had to get an acquaintance in the UK to buy a sealed (
http://www.mastertronic.com/) Mastertronic budget release for me off of Ebay, Play.com Trades or Amazon Marketplace and mail it to me.

Okay, okay, I got it. Consider the game added to my Amazon basket. (After all, it is really cheap by now.)

hmm, i played it recently on win7 64bit and had no problems, the same with xp-sp3. it does tend to crash once in a while but apart from that it was stable and I never experienced game-breaking bugs.

Mothra, have you any experience running the draw distance mod? I recall that Mafia Scene website saying it only works with v1.0 of the game bizarrely.

no, never used any mods.

Rebind jump to mouse0 and it's a cakewalk, like it is on a controller. The first time I played the last mission and failed because I didn't have the inclination to destroy my keyboard really pissed me off, but otherwise it's a fairly good port. Well, aside from the apocalyptic performance issues.

I ended up using the Xbox360 controller for that bit; depending on whether I needed to be fast or whether I could take the scenic route, I also drove around using the gamepad.
