NMA syndrome maybe?

I haven't played it, or many Ultima games, but the general consesus was that it ignored or changed a lot of the previous Ultima history, it had a more limited scope and it was a very buggy game upon release.

That's right. UIX was one of the buggiest releases in gaming history (though nothing can stand up to BC3K, I guess) and ran like ass on hardware at the time. And the story, to be plain, sucked huge donkey bollocks. Even more so if you were a fan of previous Ultimas, because it ignored most all the reasons why the series was so well-loved in the first place.
Also, the story sucked even more if you compare how the game ended to its ending from (
http://www.rpgplanet.com/ultima9/extra_stuff/original_plot.shtml) the original plot.
Ostriig, I'd suggest you find yourself a copy of Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Exult, and have a swing at one of the best games ever made. Pagan was good, but didn't really embody what Ultima was fundamentally about. If you'd played VII and the other cardinal Ultimas before it, I think you'd be able to understand some of the hostility that was levied at IX.

Your post described the game exactly.

To understand the enmity that Ultima IX has received, one must see (
http://hacki.bootstrike.com/english/nitpicks_u9.htm) this. "This" being a (more or less) complete list of the many inaccuracies in Ultima IX.
Personally, I liked it despite its flaws, but didn't feel like it was a real end. Then again, it should never end, if I had my druthers. :thumb:

Not quite an RPG, but what about (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_of_Darkness) Severance: Blade of Darkness? It had really jaw-dropping effects when it came out and still doesn't look half too bad.

Well, thanks for the info on UIX guys. I guess I can understand the resentment to some degree, and I can relate to the bug issues - I never actually got to finish the game since I had a CTD problem that popped up constantly at one point in the game. Had to give up. Still, I loved the game for my part, and it's one that I remember well to this day.

I might look it up, thanks. I do have to confess to some difficulty in going back to very old games (that I haven't played before) nowadays, on account of visuals and control. Though I've got some other catching up to do, as well - the relatively newer Planescape Torment in particular comes to mind.

Valid complaints aside, there are some on that "this" which really look a bit more like van HellSing's NMA syndrome. Take a look at this "show-stopper", for instance:
Quote:
Lord British must really be a very busy man. When the columns tore apart his land and stole the virtues from the people, he even had time to fill up the moat surrounding his castle and grow bushes and flowers in place of it! Well, the game tells us that the good king has lost contact to his subjects. This does not surprise me at all.
