I'm looking for a game that fills these points, maybe you can help me. But first the kicker: The game needs to be able to run on an EEE netbook (Asus EEE 1000H), so either it has to be rather old or have quite low minimum specs.
Now for what I hope to find:
- single player
- first person view
- wide open areas to explore, I like exploration
- ambience sounds
- rare but furious action and some RPG elements
Some games I liked that would be similar (but not exactly): Outcast, MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries, Morrowind
Thanks for all ideas!

Arx?

risen, if the first person view is negotiable

Nope. Risen is 3rd person only. Shame, because otherwise it fits the bill perfectly.
Arx also fits in there nicely. Though I wouldn't say the explorable areas are wide open, exactly. Being that it takes place in a bunch of caves and all.

What was that old RPG where you could turn into a huge beast or a cockroach? That one would foot the bill.

Lands of Lore... that is what it was. I don't remember which but there are three... you could play some old school goodness from well over a decade back.

If Risen would play on that computer then the obvious suggestion would be Oblivion, I guess, much as I personally dislike it. Stalker, perhaps, as its minimum specs are pretty low, though it isn't really open exploration. Maybe one of the earlier Gothics (2/NOTR), if a fairly serious learning curve and a bit more than RPG elements isn't minded.
I'd be tempted to just replay Outcast.

How about Strife? I haven't tried it myself yet, but it should fit those categories nicely. It's old (build engine old?), but it's supposed to be very good.
No One Lives Forever hasn't been mentioned yet either.

also Realms of the Haunting... just pulling out classics.
It was the sequel to LoL that had the beast/cockroach (although Gamespot says it was a small dinosaur... I thought it was a bug)... LoL #2. The others were meh.

You can play Mount and Blade in First Person. Also Vampire: Bloodlines.
There's also Call of Cthulhu and Dark Messiah.
Maybe Penumbrum: Overture isn't RPG enough.
If you could tolerate 3rd Person then the field would really open up.
