Well if you skip the first person, Ultima IV friggin' rocked.
I'm all old school tonight.

Either the EEEpc is a heck of a lot more powerful than I thought, or people aren't paying attention to the fact that he's looking for games that run on a netbook.
I was going to say Outcast, but then you went an named it yourself. Arx is a good suggestion, I'd say give that a shot.
Is 3rd person really that much of a deal-breaker? Because Gothic 2 is a fine, fine game.

No RPG elements to speak of, but: Trespasser.

I actually was reading fast and read that as "notebook", which isn't really such a limitation. It makes more sense with him saying netbook.
Mount and Blade has pretty low specs considering its recent age, though; so I still think it might be a good choice.

Thanks everyone, Arx is a too much of a dungeon crawler, I really want open areas, I have some doubts that Risen would work, just from looking at a few videos. Then I had a look at Lands of Lore- The Throne of Chaos, I don't know it, but it looks a lot like Dungeon Master and I would prefer true 3D.
Zygo had some good ideas, though I played Stalker recently, I'll look into the Gothic games (Nameless would kill me if I didn't). And yeah, I might just replay Outcast...that has the sort of wide open areas I meant, plus it's scifi.
Strife again (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsOODDTPmYc) looks dungeony if that video is the game. NOLF might be an idea, I've heard good things about this game (bit of an understatement).
I'm not sure if I've seen the Realms of the Haunting yet, that was meant, but Vampire: Bloodlines and Call of Cthulu are good ideas. And I'll look into Trespasser and Mount and Blade. Again, thanks everyone.

Unreal 1 w/ enhanced OpenGL renderer (available from the oldunreal website).

What do you mean by "wide open areas", Kolya? That it should be set outdoors or that it should be non-linear? Or both? Strife was rather nonlinear iirc, the levels were built as cities, or city-parts, with both indoor and outdoor areas. It certainly had exploration, and I'd say it fills all the criteria you laid out in the opening post.
a bunch of probably very obvious recs: Halo(or one of those Halo-wannabees Chrome and Breed), Marathon Trilogy?, Deus Ex, Ground Control(first person real time strategy, no shortage of exploration) or, on the more systemintense side: Stalker & Far Cry

- single player
- wide open areas to explore, I like exploration
- ambience sounds
- rare but furious action and some RPG elements
Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 with NotR. You can't go wrong there.

I mean outdoor areas, preferably with lots of panoramic views (distant horizon), non-linear gameplay is a bonus.

Might and Magic VII. Gothic.
