lolol yes I know
hey did anyone ever actually finish any of the Ultimas without cheating (not UW, just the vanilla games)?
I can say that I finished Ultima II, my first PC game ever after several Infocom titles, sans cheats. The others I did end up cheating on, but hey that was when I was what, ten years old? I plead the ignorance/innocence of youth.
While I'm completely off topic, one of my worst moments ever was getting all the way to the end of Bard's Tale and being unable to win because of all the Demon Lords and the poor state of my party. I never went back to finish... and eventually the computer died. Sadly, I have never seen the ending as a result. The cheat code of "Z" to summon an instant Earth Elemental was hardly helpful against those beasts.

There are more than a few games I never finished back in the day that I'm just getting back to on an emulator to try to finish; strange compulsion ... Bard's Tale 2 is one of them ... Wasteland, Fallout, a number of the Ultima's, Pool of Radiance ... even Legend of Zelda.

Wasteland was top notch. I got into that right about the time I got into Metallica as a kid (sixth grade maybe? right before And Justice For All came out). Wasteland + Metallica as a middle schooler was unbeatable.
That game rocked. One of the few I played through twice.

You know, since we're talking about old stuff here, I want see if anyone can remember the name of this one game I played on the old Atari ST back when I was a kid.
You played as this little armored guy, walking around exploring a dungeon, grabbing stuff, solving puzzles, and fighting monsters. Vague? Oh yeah. I remember you could throw rocks at stuff, use pickaxes to bust up blocks, and it was played from an isometric perspective. I remember that well enough because it and Solstice were the first isometric games I played.
It was so damn fun. Never got far into it because it was so hard, but playing that first section over and over again never got old to me for some reason. I wish I could recall the name, because I really want to play it again.

Might and Magic VII. Gothic.
I second these.
If you haven't had a chance to play a Might and Magic game, GoG sells the Might and Magic VI (akin to MM7), as well as all the other Might and Magic games before it, for ten USD. All of which are very good, especially the Xeen Saga.

I finished VIII by myself, albeit with a guide to the god damn jumping puzzles which had no place in an Ultima game IMO :D

Finished VII and VII Pt. 2 and 3/4 of VIII (damn tests of sorcery!) by m'self. This was before I got onto the internet, so it wasn't like I had a choice anyway.
Thanks for reminding me about them! I need to pick up where I left off in IV-VI. Playing three games in the same series concurrently is fun if jumbly on the brain. You get to see really fun bits w/respect to continuity, like when you realise that most of the people in VII are descendants of the folks you met way back during VI.

Now for what I hope to find:
- single player
- first person view
- wide open areas to explore, I like exploration
- ambience sounds
- rare but furious action and some RPG elements
