Heh.
Great as IWar2 was the thought of someone trying to play it without a joystick and on a netbook sized keyboard gives me feelings of preemptive pity.

You're a king among men, Nameless. Thank you so much. :thumb:

It doesn't have RPG elements, but I second Unreal 1 as it has fairly large outdoor areas to explore. But other levels are completely indoors.
I really recommend the UT99 single player mod (
http://onp.ut-files.com/) Operation: Na Pali. It's not perfect (voice acting is terrible and friendly AI is not great either), but the level design is excellent, it has lots of pretty custom textures, and the levels are more expansive and sprawling than the levels of the regular Unreal, also much less low-poly.
Check out the Maps page for some screenshots of the various areas you're going to visit if you choose to play it. It's one of the best SP mods of any game I've ever played.
EDIT: after reading some reviews to freshen up my memory, I must mention that while there are some amazing vistas to be enjoyed, the mod
is pretty linear. You won't find a level as non-linear as Bluff Eversmoking from Unreal 1.

Trespasser, seconded. It's quite a peculiar game and has a really clunky combat system (so does Outcast, but Trespasser is more frustrating), HOWEVER, the feeling of exploring a real world is really amazing. In my memories of the late 1990s, Trespasser is up there with Thief and Outcast as one of the most immersive games. I'd recommend to try the demo if it didn't start on top of a stupid tower which is very difficult to leave.
Another thing to try - Boiling Point: The Road to Hell. When it came out, it was a mess of a game because of the bugs. Now most of them have been resolved and the game is actually quite interesting. A sandbox South American state with HUGE areas to discover, lots of firefights, abilities growing as you progress, weapon&equipment shops, a suitably cheesy plot and the main character sneezing when it's raining. Plus, it should be quite cheap now. Really worth trying out IMO.

lolol yes I know
hey did anyone ever actually finish any of the Ultimas without cheating (not UW, just the vanilla games)?
I finished every ultima from 4 upwards (and enjoyed most of them). Although for 4, 5 and 6 I may have looked something up when I was stuck, I never actually enabled a cheat mode or anything.
As for the topic at hand, it's a pretty small selection. I can't really think of anything that hasn't already been mentioned.

Agreed wholeheartedly. There are many issues to get past with the game, but I really recommend persisting with it, because if exploration is what you want, Trespasser delivers. (
http://atx.trescom.org/) ATX is a must-have for playing the game nowadays, and (

I loved this game on the ST til my disc broke :(
I got really far and I remember thinking it had an interesting plot and great puzzles. I've always wanted something that resembled it. It was a BitMap Brothers game. Damn they made quality, and the styles could be so different.

I still covet one of the black t-shirts with the BitMap hand on it.

And I mean pretty fing soon), I realised that you could make Cadaver the FP version in TDM. All you'd need are the assets - the mechanics are actually all there bar a minor inventory GUI tweak. Then you'd need the plot, the writing, the design, mapping etc. Point is it could be done.
