Looking for good 1st or 3rd person action adventure games. - by Brian T

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is awesome in every single way (well the combat drags on too much occasionally/often/always depending on your skills), but I'm unfortunately not all too sure it runs on your rig.
Also Anachronox might be vaguely in the vain you're looking for, but it's not really combat oriented.

3. Oni - probably the best 1-player beat em up I've played(4 times)
YUSS!
The only game I've ever played where I'd rather fight hand to hand than use a newly acquired gun.
Can you get it to run on XP?
I can't :(
That or Severance: Blade of Darkness are the best two melee games I've played.
Which reminds me: SEVERANCE: BLADE OF DARKNESS

Let me add weight to BG&E, and Arx Fatalis if you can tolerate rough-edged games with hideous dialogue and voice acting ;) (I love the game, but those aspects are quite poor - and don't even think about starting a game without the latest patch).
And if you have a PS2, I would also recommend God Of War, despite the entirely awful
Hades level, which should have been cut out. It's shit, while the rest of the game is great and 'gets it right' almost without exception. If you don't own a PS2, it is worth buying just for Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus (if you're looking for action/adventure, Clossus is one of the best games you'll find).
If you never played Outcast, it's a must. Might be tricky to run in XP, but it's possible. And, hopefully out in a couple of months, (
http://www.mightandmagic.com/us/darkmessiah/teaser/) Dark Messiah is looking awesome.
EDIT: oh yeah, I thought Soul Reaver was really good, go for it.

If you like Drakan, you definitely need to try Enclave, and also Rune.. those three consist of the classics of one of my favourite genres - 3rd person melée combat action/adventure. Enclave has an excellent single player campaign.
Rune is my 2nd favourite game of all time, but i agree with henke about the underworld/hell levels dragging on for too long. also the enemies are mostly small and boring to fight. honestly, i didn't like the single player Rune campaign very much.... multiplayer is where it's at in this game... 1 on 1 honour matches online are pretty amazing. very tactical. what makes this game is the hit detection system is so tight, and the weapons are so fast & the combos fun to execute ...
edit: one more thing, you should check out some fan-made missions for Drakan... especially "Journey to Azenera" .. The guy who was making it stopped development, but he made 4 or 5 great levels (long ones too) a couple years ago. it might be difficult to find the newest version as i don't think it's hosted anywhere anymore, but if you need a copy of it just send me a PM and i can email it to you

agreed! i am really excited about that game
also, you might try Crusaders of Might & Magic, it's an older game and I've had problems running it in windows 2000 but it looks like it has potential.

Legacy of Kain - Defiance is a whole lot of fun if you can get over the stupid camera movement.

oh... also..
i don't know how i could forget: HEXEN
there are lots of new open source executables like "jhexen", "vavoom", etc, so getting it to run in windows 2000/xp with hardware acceleration and neat stuff like mouselook is no problem these days.

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb is a very good "Tomb Raiderish" game, fun to play, good action, fun (but simple) puzzles, nice fist fighting and table leg pounding, etc.

Heh, quite a few ideas here. Thanks.
I did indeed enjoy Drakan a lot (so did most of my family) so I think I will check out Rune and Enclave. I fact I was a bit disappointed at the relative lack of fan missions for Drakan and was actually thinking of trying to learn the editor and create some of my own. (easier said than done)
Currently I'm been playing Indiana Jones and The Inferno Machine. Very Tomb Raiderish, although the graphics don't look great and I find Mr Jones handles more clumsily than Ms Croft. Quite addictive nonetheless.
I suppose one more question won't hurt. I used to play the old Atari St game Dungeon Master around about 1990 and it remains one of my my best gaming experiences ( although I suppose it might be partly rose tinted glasses!)
Are there any more modern games that are like Dungeon Master? That is, a good old Ist person swords and sorcery dungeon crawl with puzzles to solve? I've tried Icewind Dale which is essentially a dungeon crawl, but being isometric you lose a lot of the "you are there" effect, and you feel a bit detached from the action.
