I did indeed enjoy Drakan a lot (so did most of my family) so I think I will check out Rune and Enclave. I fact I was a bit disappointed at the relative lack of fan missions for Drakan and was actually thinking of trying to learn the editor and create some of my own. (easier said than done)
Are there any more modern games that are like Dungeon Master? That is, a good old Ist person swords and sorcery dungeon crawl with puzzles to solve?
if you make any drakan levels, please let me know because I would love to play them.
i haven't played dungeon master, but the upcoming elder scrolls Oblivion is 1st person with swords & sorcery and dungeon crawls... not sure about the puzzle solving but it's looks like it's gonna be really good. in fact, if it's true what people are saying about the melee combat engine, it sounds like you could basically play it like an action game if you wanted to ... :D :D

Just to second some suggestions:
Deus Ex
Mafia
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Max Payne 1/2
Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
Anachronox
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is generic horrible shit.

Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny is (IMO, of course) the pinnacle of action/adventure games.

Oooh, I forgot about Mafia - give it high priority - literally dripping with atmosphere.

Am I the only one who found the actual gameplay of Mafia absolutely horrible? There's way too much driving around and the combat is tediously difficult. I finally gave up when I reached a mortifying obligatory sneaking mission.
The story was folding nicely, which makes me even more angry about the game.

I gave Mafia up on the level where you have to chase the car full of gangsters.
No, the other one.
Anyway, it was essentially impossible to do (for me :p ), so that was it for me and Mafia.

I doubt you're the only one.
I personally rate it among my top 5 gamng experiences.

As fabulous as the environment was, I tended to get impatient driving around town, but typically was not good enough to outrun the inevitable police when I was spotted driving way too fast. If I then had to restart a mission I just got more impatient with driving slowly, so it was a cycle of bad.
Really loved the atmosphere, though.
Oddly enough, the driving part I loved most was the one I read the most complaints about -- the race. They subsequently dumbed down the race with the patches (they made the opposition slower, I think), and IIRC they didn't even leave the option to drive it at the original difficulty level. That sucks, I say (unless I have it all wrong). Learning the track and winning that race was a totally awesome part of the game. Especially if you did it entirely from the cockpit view. Kinda like GPL for those of us without the ability to drive a real historical racing sim :)

I think I know the one you mean, and I think it was one of the most frustrating missions for me, also. I feel your pain.
