I'm thirding Max Payne :thumb: More action than adventure, but it's definitely plot driven, and lets face it, slomo gives it the cool points :sly:

Freedom Fighters. It'll run on that set-up and it's fun as hell.

I favor Sands of Time and Psychonauts.
other good ones, I have not played
(I'm usually a fan of Simulation and military-shooter games).

I had mixed feelings about Mafia - atmosphere and feeling of authenticity are unmatched, but you have to be in a patient and forgiving mood to play it. There are some great realistic touches, for example once I was spotted speeding on the way back from a job and was being pursued by a single police car - I can't remember exactly how the 'wanted levels' worked, but for some reason I knew I wouldn't get away with just pulling over and taking the ticket. Rather than risk a city-spanning police chase, I led them into the underground tunnel, parked and waited for the cops to pull up and leave their vehicle. I then got out, shotgunned them both and quickly fled the scene. Because they hadn't chance to telephone or radio for backup, and no other cops were aware of the situation, I got away with it clean. It's nice that the realistic treatment of action/consequence works both ways.
While it's not one of the best games I've played, it has given me one of my most memorable gaming moments. Early on there's a Goodfellas-like mission to torch a bunch of rival gangsters' cars in a parking lot outside their hangout. So I was doing the deed, finishing off the last car and had failed to realise I'd been rumbled - the bad guys were standing right behind me in the entrance to the parking lot and as soon as I noticed them, they commenced with the shooting. I got shot up badly, sprinted out the back way and ran in the exact opposite direction to where the getaway car was waiting. By the time I realised this, I was halfway down the road with evil mobsters between me and my intended escape, still popping off handgun shots but too far away to hit me. I kept running and after a couple of corners found the local el-train platform. No train, of course. I climbed up, crouched and hid on the platform and just waited for the train to arrive, hoping not to be found - another bullet wound would be the end. Good ol' emergent gameplay - still without train, I saw the bad guys come around the corner and run towards the platform steps, but then they were below me and I couldn't see them any more. A few seconds later the train finally came into view and I sat and waited, not knowing if those below were aware of my location. Just as the train was slowing to stop, I could hear them getting closer and realised one of them was ascending the steps, and the second the train doors opened, they were on the platform - I bolted on board amid a gaggle flock murder of bullets and escaped.
lucky for me the AI didn't/couldn't enter the train but as you have probably guessed, I was fully cacking it the whole time. :eww: And just to add to the punishing realism, I'd got on the wrong-way train and had to endure a near-death tour of most of the city before I got to safety. More credit to the game for not demanding that I get away in the exact manner described. A great experience, as are prowling rich neighbourhoods for fancy cars to steal and shooting out some schmuck's tyres with your .38 while driving.
Shame that the on-foot shooting sections are generally difficult, monotonous and very unrealistic (in terms of the incredible odds you, one man, must overcome). And in the mission where you are ambushed in a multi-storey car park your objective is simply to escape, yet taking a car, tearing down to the ground level and smashing your way out is not permitted - you must shoot your way out. This is from my experience of the demo, so if it was different in the full game I stand corrected.

I strongly suggest Freedom Fighters - from the makers of Hitman series. It is about fighting Reds on NY as alternate history they capture South America and Invade NY.
