Why would they? They don't own any of the intellectual properties.

Exactly, when have game developers ever shared in sales profits? They get paid to do a job and then they move on to the next project. If they're lucky, it's another game with the same company.

Indeed - I wish that the developers in that link did still get benefit from the work they created but ultimately it's whoever holds the rights to the games and make the games available for purchase that get the money these days. They've still got costs to cover and (unfortunately as they're still not here) the developers do not.

Yup, probably 99.9% of (non-indie) devs earn a regular monthly salary independent of the actual game they are working on. Buying a game translates to "will they stay afloat for the next game or close down." And occasional bonuses / rises.
EDIT: also if a game comes from a publisher, the dev studio (as a whole) usually receives a fixed payment so, again, the money they make doesn't change, it all goes to the publisher. But if publisher doesn't make profit he may choose not to give the devs their next project and hello shutdown.

You're not doing the devs any favors (unfortunately), but each copy of Thief Gold & 2 bought off GOG shows Square/Enix that there's still interest in the old games in the series. Which means that possibly, sortakinda, in a roundabout way, they might be more inclined into releasing extra bonuses to drive sales up even moreso. Such as this mysterious source code all you people keep going on about, and other nifty little things.

Is this news to anybody?
Yandros on 16/2/2012 at 22:05
Is that a rhetorical question?
