Changing the internal workings of the game seems like a lot of effort for a rerelease distribution to go to. You'd think they'd just package up all the data files into one big encrypted file.

Yes, I agree with that, but IIRC the person I was talking to confirmed that all the .ibt files from the CD/DVD versions were there, with the same names, they were just a lot smaller and could not be searched for texture names using a hex editor like the CD/DVD version .ibt files can. Of course, I can't be 100% positive that this person did exactly what I asked him to do. But this is the info I received.
