Pressing up will increase the amount of money you want to give him. Once you've set a price, just hit the action button and you'll hand it over. After that, he'll show up everytime you reach level 5 until you've paid him in full.

This sounds fun, but the game won't recognize my gamepad for some reason, and The Onion claims you *really* don't want to play it with keyboard controls. Sigh.

The keyboard controls are fine. There's a minor learning curve to begin with (I also got rid of "down to run" and just bound run to shift) but after a few goes the controls are pixel-perfect.

I just had a great game where I was finding heaps of treasure and crates - I got up to holding about 18 ropes - spent something like $17,000 on a cape, and still had about 4 lives remaining on the yeti/UFO level (as far as I've ever got) so things were looking great and I was trying to be cautious. Unfortunately in a moment of weakness I failed to look before I lept and went sailing off the bottom of the map, watching in horror as I realised the floor I was expecting to be there simply wasn't. Once again though, the great thing about this game is I wasn't mad or frustrated at all, I laughed hysterically at my misfortune :D

No way in hell would I want get my Spelunky action on with a keyboard. Just use a keymapper, like (http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm) Joy2Key. Alternately, you've got (http://www.xpadder.com/) Xpadder, which is much easier to use, but you'll have to pay $10 if you want the lastest version with Vista/7 support.

Oh man, I stole some climbing gloves from a shop and jumped across a ledge ont the opposite wall. The shopkeeper jumped down, straight into one of those flesh-eating flowers. I picked up the shotgun with a smile on my face and shot the flower...the shopkeeper jumps out with (another??) shotgun and kills me.

Will try Joy2Key, though not sure why it's necessary...I'm just using an Xbox 360 pad, which at this point is kind of the default gamepad for PCs.
