I haven't really paid enough attention during the game to know the answer to these questions about the first two Thief games:
Do you get to keep unspent loot from the beginning of one mission when you start the new mission? I don't think you do, but never really checked. I think I completed the bonehoard mission with 2000 loot and started the next level with just 2000 loot. so that answers the question I believe, but I would like confirmation.
Is the loot that you aquire only available during the start of the next mission?
I have just always played the game without buy anything at the start of a mission, thinking I could save the loot for when I needed it.

The loot you get at the end of mission X is what you can use to buy things at the start of mission X + 1. LGS did not like a (
http://www.cingular.com/customer_service/rollover) rollover system and so there's no point trying to save up your money for a later mission. Or atleast that's what I always thought...

I think there are a couple of exceptions, well sort of exceptions, in Thief 2. A couple of the missions are "double" missions where you go straight from one to the other without a chance to go shopping. In these cases your loot is carried over.

Yes.
It happens in The Dark Project as well.

And in at least two levels (Escape in TDP, and Ambush in TMA) your loot does not exactly roll-over, but you actually have to collect a coin purse containing what you swiped in the previous mission.

i always assumed the money you don't spend goes toward paying the rent/buying groceries/paying the electric bill (if there is one... does the city public works charge for basic facilities?), that sort of thing.
