Am I the only one who thinks that the loot requirement on Expert can sometimes really hamper your enjoyment of a mission? Just played The Haunted Cathedral, finished everything else within about 35 mins, relaxed thinking that my Iron Man attempt was now pretty much in the bag, just needed to find the rest of the required loot amount - but then had to spend another two hours in the map before finally finding the last of the 2000 gold needed.
Having to spend ages scouring every square inch is seriously not fun and becomes a drudging chore.
Anyone else have this issue?

When replaying Deadly Shadows I definitely found that I don't have the patience to strive for near-perfection that I had 10-15 years ago. I'm generally happy with something along the lines of getting 75% of the loot, and depending on the game I also find that higher requirements tend to frustrate me rather than add to my enjoyment. I still try to be thorough, but I more quickly draw a line between being thorough and being pedantic.

I never considered it a chore. To be an expert you also have to be observant.

Deadly Shadows definitely has this problem on Expert. 90% is a bit much. The highest percentage you're ever supposed to get in the previous games is in Undercover which requires you to steal 87%. But I think the worst offender might be Thieves Guild because of how infuriating it is. I always barely get past 2000 and it's usually when I grab the absolute last piece of loot in Donal's mansion just before finishing the mission. It doesn't help that the downwinders are poor as taff and the whole place is filled with very low value items, there's just a ridiculous amount of them.

The only real problem I had with the loot requirments was in The haunted cathedral. On my first playthrough I had to run around about a quarter of an hour to find the rest of the loot and on my second playthrough I entcountered this problem again only this time I actually had to go down into the burrick tunnels to find all necessary loot. Masks is also horrible because of this in addition of all the other problems with this mission.

TDSs 90% is way too much since it likes to have more, less valuable loot then the other games. for the other games i think theyre fine though for my ghosting runs i would have preferred 5% less xD

Funny you mention The Haunted Cathedral, because it was the only mission which frustrated me with its loot goal the first time playing through. :) I also had this problem in some fan-missions. Ultimately though, loot goals are a good way to encourage exploration, they just have to be well-balanced. 90% of loot like in TDS is too much, that's certain.

I think the reason why Ion Storm was comfortable with having 90% as the standard expert goal is that the game shipped with the loot glint that made loot items almost impossible to miss.

I'd forgotten TDS. Yes, I went through the tedious go round and round in circles until you eventually give up and consult a lootthrough, with that one on several missions.
I get that it increases the challenge but really, some challenges should be left optional and not be considered core to success and progression. A bit like how you have the Ghost playstyle, and then you can optionally try a Perfect Ghost (or whatever it is called when you Ghost AND get all loot) if you wish - it is not considered vital to get an excessively high percentage of loot.

I too had problems with the Haunted Cathedral loot requirement on my first playthrough of Thief, especially because it's got lots of little nooks and crannys where the loot could be hiding. I had like one piece of loot left to find and I was so frustrated I just cheated past that mission.
